Spelling Mastery

At St Helena’s, we use the Spelling Mastery program in Years 3 to 6. This program has been carefully designed to help students improve their spelling abilities and achieve success in their academic pursuits.

The Spelling Mastery program is a research-based approach to teaching spelling that has been shown to be highly effective. The program is designed to teach students the spelling patterns and rules of the English language in a structured and systematic way. Through the use of explicit instruction, practice activities, and immediate feedback, students are able to develop their spelling skills and build their confidence in their abilities.

One of the key benefits of the Spelling Mastery program is that it can help students become more successful in all areas of their academic lives. Good spelling skills are essential for effective communication, and they can help students succeed in subjects like English, history, and science.

In the program, students are broken into groups of similar spelling ability across Year 3 to 6.  In these groups, students will complete different activities to practice and develop their spelling. Some of these activities will be done with the help of their teacher, and other students will complete on their own. After students finish each activity, your teachers will tell them how they went and give them feedback so that students can keep improving.

The program also gives students special tests to see how they're doing and where they need more practice. This helps the teacher know how to best help them with your spelling.

We are excited to use the Spelling Mastery program in our school and look forward to seeing the many benefits it will bring to our students. We encourage parents and carers to support their children in their spelling practice at home, and we look forward to working together to help our students achieve success.
