Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 2/Week 1-3

Writing

This term in writing, students have been learning about the structure and language features used in a persuasive text. They have focused on how to plan their writing by coming up with strong arguments to support their point of view. Students have explored the structure of a paragraph, ensuring they include examples and evidence to support their arguments. They have been applying their skills when completing timed writes using different prompts.  Next week, students will focus on how to write the introduction and conclusion of a persuasive text. They will continue doing timed writes on different topics. 

Reading 

In reading this term, students have been focused on answering comprehension questions from specific texts. They have learnt to; read the text, read the questions, read the text again and then answer the questions carefully. Students have been reading persuasive texts and identifying the structures and language features used. They have been looking for and highlighting high modal verbs in the persuasive texts they read. Next week in reading, students will be identifying emotive language with persuasive writing.

Maths

In Week 1, students learnt how to do mental strategies while solving problems using addition and subtraction. They have been looking at different NAPLAN questions to familiarise themselves with the different types of questions, in preparation for NAPLAN in week 4. 

This week, students have been learning and applying a written strategy to addition, subtraction and multiplication. They have also been learning about short division. These strategies have been applied to different problem solving questions and games.

Inquiry

Students have begun inquiring into "How the World Works". They have been learning about: the difference between scientific discoveries and inventions and how scientific discoveries impact the way we live and the environment. We have been conducting science experiments exploring gravity, carbon dioxide and electricity. In week 3 students will learn about the scientific discoveries related to our solar system.
