Celebrating the National Science Week 2021 Schools

Sat 14th Aug - Sun 22nd Aug

When: Thursday 12th August

Theme: Time for Tech | Food- Different by Design!

Presented by: Perform Education

Payment and consent via Compass

An incursion for Year 8 Students.

STEM is the future for food. It’s never been more important to be knowledgeable on what makes food technology tick, from sustainable agriculture to innovation to biosecurity.

Time for Tech explores how the more we know about food science and technology, the more we can solve problems in everyday life. Celebrating the National Science Week 2021 School Theme: Food: Different by Design, students will learn all about sustainable agriculture and laboratory-developed foods as well as its (sometimes unintended) consequences, and so be better informed about STEM, career pathways and how we can all do our bit to support the planet.

And how are we going to do that? With comedy of course, delivered by Perform Education.

For just $12.00, students in Year 8 have the opportunity to attend this event at school on Thursday 12th of August. Parents simply need to pay and consent on Compass.

The show consists of four interactive science sketches that center on different aspects of food technology. Students in Year 8 will learn about sustainable agriculture, the link between food technology and innovation, how technology helps design creative food solutions, and biosecurity in a COVID impacted world. Throughout, audience members and student volunteers are encouraged to offer suggestions that the actors will incorporate into the action. The result is that students have input into the show while watching it!

Year 10 Extended Experimental Investigation

Poster Display

Wednesday 19th May

1:45 – 2:45pm  |  Library & L-Block

As parents may be aware one of the CATs for Year 10 Science involves a student designed investigation on a topic of their choice. In the first stage students worked on planning for this task in class in the last couple of weeks of term 1 so they could be ready for the next stage, their experiments.

As part of the structure of this CAT, students completed this experimental component outside of class, with the term break giving them the perfect opportunity to stretch the boundaries of what they could do. I am sure parents were engage with their child's investigation, helping to ensure it was complete as assistants or possibly subjects!

In class and at home students are now putting together their findings and developing their report in one of the traditional scientific formats of a poster in a mirror of what they will be required to do for one of their VCE SACs. We, their science teachers,  look forward to seeing their final product in the next few weeks.  To help celebrate the students’ efforts and reward their hard work the College will be holding a Poster Display session on Wednesday 19th of May in the Library and L-Block during period 4.

Year 10 parents & guardians are invited, encouraged, to attend to help this celebration of student achievement.

Should parents or guardians wish to attend please contact the College via the main office 0395615811 or via email wheelers.hill.sc@edumail.vic.gov.au to book a place by Monday 17th so we can confirm numbers for COVID purposes. We will also ask that you sign in via the main office on the day.

Finally thank you to all parents & guardians for their support of their child’s engagement with science through this project.
