Tournament of Minds – 2021

Tournament of Minds is a problem-solving competiton (program) for teams of students integrated across Year Levels 7-10. The Tournament's aim is to enhance and develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging, creative and competitive environment. It is an extra-curricular program that involves participation outside of our normal school timetable each week for six weeks, after school in Term 3 and at least one weekend to compete at the regional finals held each year in Churchill at Kurnai College in August.

Recent College participation in the 2019/20 program was very successful. There are four disciplines or learning areas that teams compete in: Arts; Literature; STEM and Social Sciences. Students are invited to join the program with a preference for a discipline however teams are formed based on team strengths.

This is presently organised to go ahead in 2021 as normal and students are invited to join a combined team of seven students to compete. This process is facilitated in Term 2 with a student workshop at the school to help new program participants to understand how Tournament works and how much fun it is. Students can sign up at the Library or find out more information by emailing the program coordinator rmuranty@mmcrc.catholic.edu

I encourage students from Years 7-10 to sign up now and be involved, we need eight Year 7 students to join. It is one of the best opportunities in the College to make new friends and extend your learning through experience, creativity as well as striving for excellence with a team!

Students bring their lunch.

Topics for discussion and further study:

  • Analysing questions (prompts)
  • Clearer and more efficient responses
  • Rich discussion with peers and English specialists (they really are from England!!)

LIBRARY NEWS

Harmony Week

We celebrated Harmony Week from March 15 to March 19. This is a celebration of Australia's cultural diversity. It is a time to reflect on respecting each other and our differences.

To celebrate this important week students were invited to come to the Library and colour in a cut out figure, write a positive message about multiculturalism and stick it on our Harmony Week Wall.

Dozens of students participated to create a wonderful display. Message such as “I love to meet people from other cultures” “Food from other countries is delicious” and “Treat everyone with respect” were prevalent.

The students had a wonderful time creating their figures and writing messages celebrating Australia’s multicultural society.

ASX SCHOOL SHARE MARKET GAME - HUMANITIES NEWS

There is much excitement at school at present as the MacKillop ASX Traders seek to maximise their portfolio values. We have over 70 syndicates competing in this national competition involving students from Years 7 to 12. The competition is organised by the ASX.

Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in over 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market, so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.

Congratulations to the following students who are our weekly Top MacKillop ASX Traders:

Week 1 - Silas O’Halloran and Darcy Methven (Year 11 Economics)

Portfolio Value $50,063.83 (after trading only two days!)

Week 2 - Samantha Dyke  and Lainey Symes (VCAL)

                  Portfolio Value $50, 858.24

Week 3 - Samantha Dyke  and Lainey Symes (VCAL)

                  Portfolio Value $51, 254.24
