Year 11 Camp

Courage

At the end of the last term, a wonderful group of 29 students and 5 staff members enjoyed three action-packed days and nights in the Dwellingup forest for our Year 11 Camp.

This year our camp theme was COURAGE.

“Be Strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or troubled.
The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1: 91.

At our Year 11 camp at Jarrah Forest Camp and Dare Adventures Camp, we were all faced with one fear or another.   For some students, being away from home and loved ones takes courage. For others, courage is speaking aloud in front of the class, participating in a new activity, being vulnerable with a friend, walking in the dark bush without a torch, or dealing with fright at seeing a spider!  Courage for you may be stepping back from the edge of the abseiling tower, crawling through mud, or even feeling like we looked stupid in front of our friends?  At camp, we get the opportunity to practice courage every day!

Camp activities:

  • Bush night walk, no torches
  • Worship and music evening
  • Quiz night
  • “Minute to win it “games
  • Archery tag
  • Kayaking
  • Raft building
  • Team challenges - strategic thinking/lateral thinking, north-south magic ball, spider web, tyre stepping
  • Obstacle course and mud commando crawl
  • Abseiling and rock climbing

Yes, we did all this in three and a half days!!

Throughout the week, our multi-talented instructors from Dare Adventures would clearly and carefully explain each challenge, what to wear, the safety requirements, and the challenge procedure… all students could then “have a go.” Everyone was encouraged to participate in these unique opportunities.

My favourite part of the camp was definitely abseiling because it was something I have never tried before and I am scared of heights. By living, eating and doing activities 24/7 together...this made me feel closer to other students”   Savannah, Year 11.

No school camp is possible without an incredible amount of extra hard work, time and effort from The King’s College Staff both before and during camp. We would especially like to acknowledge the valuable contributions of Mr Ian Elder, Mr Kyle Baggaley, Mrs Karin Au, Ms Lucinda Hill, Miss Amy Salmond, Mr Adian Davies and Mrs Michelle White. They all shared their talents, stories and wisdom with the students and encouraged the Year 11s to be courageous!

We would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Au for organising a memorable camp and for all the staff, Mr Davies, Ms Hill, Mrs White and Miss Salmon. A special thank you to Mr Elder and Mr Baggaley who drove down for a shorter visit especially to spend their valuable time with us.”  Year 11 Cohort
