From the Principal

Community Working Bee - Sunday, 2nd May commencing at 9.00am

Oakleigh PS needs volunteers to assist with tidying up and beautification of the school grounds.  Work will include weeding of garden beds, trimming trees and shrubs, raking up leaves and spreading mulch.  The more volunteers we have the better.

What to bring:

  1. Gloves
  2. Rakes, shovels, spades, wheel barrows (if you have them – tools will also be available)
  3. Sunscreen & hat (if hot)
  4. Bottle of water
  5. Snacks

If you are able to assist for any part of the day, please call the school on 9568 0558 or

email Michele at michele.nolan@education.vic.gov.au indicating an approximate timeframe where you will be able to assist.

We would also greatly appreciate if any parents are able to bring a MULCHER to assist with breaking down the green waste.  If you have one you could lend, but cannot assist on the day, please call the school and we will arrange pickup and return.

The school will also be putting on a sausage sizzle for lunch.

As the school cannot provide supervision, we ask that you leave your children at home.

Special Project:

The school is also looking for volunteers to take existing sleepers and ‘transform’ them into garden seats.  Work best done off-site.  If you can assist, please contact the school for more information.

School Review

Every Victorian Government School is reviewed at least once every four years.

The reviews play an important part in how the Department supports school improvement. They provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs.

The School uses the review findings to work with their school community to develop clear actions to move the school forward.

The School self-evaluation involves a school community identifying its progress, achievements and barriers to improvement. It provides schools with a process to collect data from diverse sources to inform action for improving student outcomes and professional learning, much the same as we use student data to identify a student’s achievements/strengths and identify future learning goals.

School reflection and self-evaluation helps identify:

  • what is working well
  • what needs to continue
  • which areas of the school's work may need to be improved or further developed

It informs decisions relating to priority-setting, initiatives, strategies and actions for improvement.

Review Process

Reviews are conducted by experienced educators trained in the use of the National School Improvement Tool, a nationally-recognised framework for reviewing teaching and learning practices.

The extensiveness of the review depends upon a range of factors, including the size and context of the school. Reviewers look closely at each school’s performance data and speak with a range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school.

Unlike many other review systems, schools are not ranked or given a performance rating. Instead, the school is given a comprehensive report for consideration.

The report details key findings and recommended improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. Principals are encouraged to share this information with their staff and school community to help shape the school’s strategic direction.

Parent and Community Participation

Feedback from parents and the community is an important part of school reviews, with everyone encouraged to have their say. Feedback from parents will be sought via both the School Council and Classroom Representative Scheme this term prior to the formal review.  Feedback from parents will also be sought via the Reviewers early next term.
