Performing Arts Captains’ Concert

This Wednesday, 24 March, commencing at 7.30pm will be our first major concert back in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre since COVID-19 forced the shutdown.

The current Performing Arts Captains, Isabelle D, Sean B and Lewis M have chosen to raise awareness of those who feel marginalised in the LGBTIQIA+ community, through the charity Minus18.

In return for a $2 donation, audience members will receive their own rainbow ribbon lapel pin to wear with pride at the concert and beyond. This small but visible sign will show our support and acceptance for those in our school who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Due to COVID protocols, audience members are required to still book their free tickets by visiting https://www.trybooking.com/BPJXG. You will then be asked for a $2 donation upon arrival. Rainbow ribbons are already available from Mr Cooper’s office in the CPA.

College Middle School Play

This year’s Middle School Play will transport you to Neverland and the world of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys and Captain James Hook. JM Barrie’s well-loved tale has been around for more than 100 years. Seeking adventure, Wendy Darling and her brothers John and Michael, jump at the chance to join Peter Pan in his journey to Neverland. Here they encounter mermaids, pirates, mystical birds and the Piccaninny Indian Tribe.

The show opens for two performances only, on 13 May at 7.30pm and 14 May at 3.30pm. Bookings open next week for what is certain to be a memorable production, featuring almost 30 students on stage from Years 7-9. Go to https://www.trybooking.com/BPUYC. Fun for the whole family!

College VCE Play

“boy girl wall” is the story of Thom and Alethea, two neighbours desperately trying to keep their lives from falling apart. It is also the story of the interconnecting Wall that has decided they belong together. Featuring a cast of one, played by three actors, “boy girl wall” is a fast-paced comedy about life that we can all relate to. It is not a love story. This is a story about love. Which is to say, real love. Which is to say, it’s a million moments of misery and one good one. Will the Wall succeed in its quest to bring these two together?

The show opens for three performances only, on 26 May and 27 May at 7.30pm and 28 May at 3.30pm. Bookings open next week at https://www.trybooking.com/BPUYM.

Please note: “boy girl wall” features coarse language and adult themes. Parental guidance is recommended.

Performing Arts Staff Profiles

Mr Jevon Scandrett

Jevon studied a Bachelor of Arts (Drama/Literature) at Deakin University before completing his Master of Teaching at Latrobe. He joined the staff three years ago as our Primary Performing Arts teacher and now teaches Primary Performing Arts, Lower Secondary Drama and general classroom, this year in Year 1. He has been teaching for eight years and joined us from rural Victoria. He is also an onstage performer himself and got to play the memorable role of Doctor Dilamond in Wicked for Shepparton Theatre Arts Group in 2018. He also lived in London for two years, allowing him to see many amazing West End Shows. Since arriving at Aitken, he has loved accessing the amazing facilities and working with great staff.

Ms Stephanie Opasinis

Stephanie has been teaching Media for 14 years, the past 3 of which have been at Aitken. In her previous schools, she has also had roles as Art Department Head and School Magazine Coordinator. She completed her degree at Melbourne University and distinctly remembers her awe at the huge Hogwarts-style doors of the Cinema Studies building. One of her favourite Performing Arts experiences has been at a school in the country when half of the student population attended the Film Festival and the teachers on yard duty thanked her for a very quiet day with no issues in the yard. She has also loves her ‘Aitken Project’ mug that one of her Year 11 students designed for the anchors of the Aitken TV Broadcast: a news style program made at Aitken that is written, performed and filmed by the students. Stephanie enjoys working at Aitken because the students are very polite and are willing to ‘give things a go’. This year she is looking forward to seeing the creative ideas her Year 12 students are creating for their folios.
