Around the School

Year 8 ACE Class

On Thursday 4th of March, the Year 8 ACE class of 2021 had a friendly incursion with a cast of many animals, that took over all of our hearts

Staff from the Animals of Oz came to visit our class and presented a number of various animals from snakes to frogs. We learnt about their habitats, their behaviours but most importantly, what we can do to keep them safe and away from endangerment.

We sat in a circle around the presenter and listened carefully to her stories and how they were told and presented. In our English class right now we have been tasked with writing stories for these animals and are doing research for our fiction or non-fiction stories.

The visit was a great breath of fresh air from our regular English work and we hope that other classes can experience this some day as well.

InterGREAT

Year 9s have had a bright start to InterGREAT in 2021. We have had three guest speakers share their inspiring journeys. Cam Greenwood spoke about how he turned his dreams of designing and creating surfboards into a successful surf brand. Cam also creates positive change in developing countries, helping provide access to clean drinking water and assisting in rebuilding in the wake of natural disasters.

Tess Lloyd is a member of the Victorian Institute of Sport and the Australian Olympic Sailing team. She spoke to us about her courageous story after a sailing accident put her in an induced coma. She suffered from serious brain trauma and was unable to walk or talk. Tess has shown remarkable courage and has successfully achieved her Olympic dream of being selected to complete in the Tokyo Olympics.

We also heard from Tammy van Wisse, a successful marathon swimmer. Tammy has shown such incredible perseverance and she explained how developing a growth mindset helped her enter the Guinness Book of Records as the first person to swim across Bass Strait (and the only person to do so thus far)! Tammy’s story was truly inspirational and a perfect example of how far perseverance can take us.

Inspired by these stories, students have been working hard on their own Personal Projects. This term-long project challenges students to set their own goals, develop new skills and fosters independent learning. Students need to display grit, tenacity, perseverance and resilience in order to overcome obstacles and complete their projects on time. These are life-skills that individuals need in order to thrive!

Students will be completing these projects in their own time over the coming weeks.

Parents and the whole school community are invited to attend the Personal Project Parent Expo on Wednesday 28th April from 6pm - 7pm to see the amazing projects that our Year 9s have produced.
