Junior School Report
Time flies when you’re having fun! How is it that Term 1 is nearly over?? Junior School has certainly been full of excitement this term as students have settled into their classes, working hard in the classroom and taking up all of the wonderful extracurricular activities that RSC presents.
Who Needs a Pool Anyway?
On Tuesday 9th March, students participated in an alternative swimming carnival – the 2021 edition titled ‘Who Needs a Pool Anyway?’ as COVID had yet again thrown a spanner into the works! Whilst the weather proved challenging, students descended down onto the oval in true house spirit ready to participate in a range of water-based novelty events to earn some House points! Activities included noodle soccer, water balloon volleyball, pony express and of course, the slip and slide was certainly the highlight!
Year 7 & 8 Cyber Safety workshops
Students in Years 7 and 8 were fortunate to learn all about responsible use of digital technologies through a workshop run by The Cyber Safety Project.
Here’s what the students had to say:
On Thursday the 18th of March the Year 7’s listened to a presentation from the Cyber Safety Project. The talk covered various topics such as Cyber Bullying and being responsible for things we post social media. I thought it was relevant and the presenters were engaging. We learnt about the values of responsibility, integrity, strength and empathy when interacting online. Learning these important safety tips was a really valuable experience, especially having just started at RSC.

During Bounce, we had 2 guest speakers come to talk to us about cyber safety. From this presentation I learned how to better be safe online and what the word doxing means. Doxing is basically online stalking; the offender will piece together information just from your photos that you post online and tell you he or she knows where you are or where you go to – something to be mindful of when we interact online!

On Thursday the 18th March, during our Bounce session, we had the amazing chance to have some representatives from the ‘The Cyber Safety Project’ come to meet us at our school. Earlier in the year, we were all asked to answer a sheet of questions about our social media experiences in the past and things that we may have encountered online and go into detail about them. On the day, the representatives talked to us about some interesting topics about social media and backed it up with data from our Year 7 & 8 classes. We went over topics about the social media apps we owned, if we had received mean comments, if our accounts were public or private and also if students had received nude photos. The data was incredible in these topics, for example, 38% of students in Year 7 & 8 have public social media accounts and 60% of students with social media have spoken to a stranger online before. We were also told some real stories about children’s social media experiences, where they were threatened and bullied into revealing personal information, like their address, their name and age and sometimes even being forced into sending inappropriate images online. I think that this session made a lot of us realise the damage that social media can deal and that we must be careful about the things we share on the internet and I’m very happy that the school was able to make me and my peers see through our phone screens and see that social media is not what it seems at a first glance.

Lunch time clubs
Just a reminder to students to check Compass and MS Teams for lunch time clubs and opportunities. Kahoot Club, Skipping and Just
Dance are proving to be popular! Other lunch time activities for the whole school are also available including Stand Out group, Art Club and French/Indo Clubs – get involved!
Upcoming Progress Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences
Right as we speak, students are being assessed against their learning behaviours (see visual below) for each of their subjects through progress reports.
Progress reports will be available to parents on the 24th of March and can be accessed through Compass. We encourage parents to view these reports as they are an excellent tool to collect feedback on your student’s progress in the classroom.
In addition to Progress reports, parents are also invited to attend the Parent Teacher Conferences that will be held on Wednesday the 31st of March from 12.30pm – 8pm. Parents are encouraged to attend with their students and bookings can be made through Compass once the portal is open on the 24th of March.
School Photos
We finally got to have school photo day last week! Not a strand of hair was out of place and our uniform was perfect! Just a reminder to look out for a notification on the Compass Newsfeed as school photos will be ordered via Compass.
Bike Safety
As many students travel to and from school on their bikes and scooters, we would like to remind parents to ensure your child is wearing a helmet at all times whilst riding. We would also like to remind students that they must dismount their scooter or bike and walk once on the school grounds to ensure their safety and the safety of those around. Once the bikes or scooters are on school grounds, they must be locked away in the designated bike bays.
