Have Sum Fun and Term 2 workshops

Have Sum Fun

On Friday, March 19, two teams from Year 9 and Year 10 joined an exciting Have Sum Fun Face to Face Competition. The students include:

Team 1:   Jonathan Le, Theodore Ciungwanara, Jeann Valdez,  Agna Aji, Jia Ying Chen, Logan Davies

Team 2:   Akshita Minhas, Saahir Karnam, Sarah Abood, Shelna Sony,

                   Joseph Abusman, Kien Nguyen

The two teams raced against the clock to solve four intense rounds of eight challenging problems. There were a large number of schools competing and as well as having a great time, the teams put in a creditable performance. Team 1 finishing 10th and Team 2 finished in the middle.

Ms C Wang (Teacher of Mathematics)

Students say:

The idea of participating in a three-hour math competition sounds unappealing to most, but MAWA’s Have “Sum” Fun competition provides a unique and insightful opportunity to challenge your mathematical capabilities and teamwork.  The night features four rounds of increasing difficulty to keep your small group constantly vigilant through anticipation, shock, disappointment, but also hope.

Jia Chen (Year 9 - K2)

I did have Have Sum Fun twice and I had a lot of fun. I learned a lot from doing the maths questions that I could not learn from the normal school syllabus. Coming tenth this year was a great achievement of St Norbert College. I thank Miss Wang for giving us this great experience!

Theodore Ciungwanara (Year 10 - K5)

Have Sum Fun is a great maths competition that I look forward to every year. This year was somewhat unique, as we did not get any chances to practice as a team. Despite this, the team I was in was able to get the best that I've ever experienced, if I remember correctly, we scored 25/32. Our coordination and teamwork was on par with experiences we had previously; again, without having any practice. As coordinator for my team, I'm very happy with our performance and willingness to participate. Everybody had an essential part to play which heavily contributed with our time management and final score.  There were a few mistakes here and there but hey, we did our best! I would like to thank those who competed in this competition, especially my teammates; you guys are awesome!
