Student Reflections

Year 7

Throughout the years, voting has been a vital and necessary part of developing Australian democracy. Just last week, all the Year 7s were able to vote for a candidate just like at a real polling booth! All candidates filmed a simple but effective two-minute video to show to all students and try to convince them that they were the best candidate for the various committees to represent Year 7. During humanities, the Year 7s learned about the Australian voting system, Parliament, the three levels of government, the rights and responsibilities of an Australian citizen, and many more.

The Australian voting system has changed a lot from the 1800s to the 1900s. These changes have impacted Australia and developed it to become the amazing country it is today. Women and indigenous people now have the right to vote in elections unlike in the past. All Year 7s are grateful to have the opportunity to apply to become candidates.  Many girls gave it a go and went out of their comfort zone and applied for a leadership position of their choice. We received many different and unique videos, we even had a rap!  All the Year 7s who applied for a leadership position have to wait. The votes will decide their fate.

Congratulations to all the Year 7s who tried out for a leadership position!

Great job to the Year 7 girls applying for leadership positions, it is very brave as they are new to the Killester community and they have already made contributions to the school. The Year 7 girls applying for leadership had to submit a  google form on what contributions they have made to the Killester college community, their qualities that will enable them to be a good leader and what ideas they have to introduce to the committee. Then we watched video speeches made by the applicants which included what they have done in primary school or if they had a leadership role. It took us quite a few mornings to get through all the videos but we learnt something about the people we didn’t know and that was an opportunity for the leadership applicants to build confidence and talk about their attributes and experiences. On Thursday the 25th of March at lunchtime, in order of classes St Maria Goretti, St Hildegard, St Elizabeth, St Nea, St Rose, St Rafka we voted class by class in Brigid’s well. There were older students who handed out the ballot papers for each committee and everyone voted for their own house only. We did preferential voting and we knew the process because we learnt about that in humanities and that is the type of voting system we use in Australia. It was a weird feeling voting said one Year 7 student. The voting was anonymous and we put the ballot papers in the box it belonged to. I know most candidates might be feeling eager to know who has claimed the leadership positions for 2021.

Year 8

On Tuesday 30th of March, we had the opportunity to host a Kahoot for the new Year 7’s to get involved in activities during lunchtime and to get to know each other more. We played fun Kahoots on various topics such as Disney, Emojis and more. Everyone had lots of fun! We also held a raffle and we had 2 winners, Congratulations to them! There was a final-mini karaoke and amazing voices were heard throughout it all. Overall, everyone enjoyed the activities and had a fun time. We look forward to organising more lunchtime activities for the Year 7s next term!

Starting Year 11

And now another year finds her,

In her striped blue dress and her black leather shoes,

Expecting to endure the tedium ahead,

Gloom pervades her and she succumbs to her blues.

Yet, upon her arrival, she notices a difference,

A slight but ever so rousing change.

She is told she has to bloom from her seed,

And to such an expectation, she thinks “how strange!”

But as time wears on,

She is pushed to think and learn her own way.

For only then can she use her big beautiful brain

To conquer the day.

And when the overwhelming distress of change

Pulls her into the depths of her plight,

She knows that even in the abyss of darkness,

She can count on her friends to guide her towards the light.

Not knowing of everything, and yet full of vigour,

She gazes upon her future with faith and poise.

She feels no pinch or prick of fear,

For she knows that change can indeed inspire life’s joys.
