Second Life Sculpture

The Year 10 Drawing and Sculpture students have designed and constructed sculptures using found and discarded objects.  Here are selected parts of the artist statements written about the work.

I made this piece to increase awareness of the very bad living conditions people in my country or of unfortunate background face on a daily basis. The towns that many families struggle to live in are very unhygienic and dangerous to even be in during the day which shows the aftermath of us not caring about our planet, not caring about our hygiene or ourselves, not caring enough about the things we take for granted and instead taking everything for granted until we have nothing left thus the creation of the slums - or in my piece known as ‘Shrivel Town.’ - Bianca

Deprived’ along with the posture of my sculpture displays the hardships and hopelessness that many people in our world suffer from. Many people automatically think of the environment and animals when the term “unsustainability” comes up, however we often overlook the unsustainability that can be found in families who live in poverty or suffer from domestic violence. - Taylah

My sculpture was made to have a symbolic meaning and bring awareness to the way we’re using up our resources. The number of coffee pods that find their way into landfills every year is much over what it should be. - Indianna

"Bottle caps alone take around 450 years to decompose because they are made of hard plastic. Plastic bottles take around 1,000 years to biodegrade. Over the last 30 years, 20 million bottle caps have been collected on the seashore" - Meryam

"Oblivion" represents our ignorance towards the environment’s current condition. Many of us don’t realise how severe and quickly changes are happening within the planet. Even now, there are those still in denial of the changes befalling the planet, and that we are faultless in this change. - Nhu

I decided to sculpt a turtle for the hidden meaning of green sea turtles being endangered. Because of pollution to habitat such as seagrass beds and coastal waters, green sea turtles have been on the endangered list since 1978. - Sienna

My sculpture ‘Symbol of the Ocean’ I chose to carve a wooden turtle as a symbol and to represent all marine life, endangered species and the massive amount of pollution and discarded waste that has made its way to our oceans. - Jessica N

Visual Communication Design

Unit 1 Outcome 1: Drawing as a Means of Communication

As part of Unit 1, Outcome 1, the Year 11 VCD students studied the skills of observational drawing as a means to communicate ideas and concepts to an audience. They developed their understanding of the aesthetics, appearance and function of objects and structures and investigated ways of representing form and surface textures by applying different materials and media to render drawings. In the following drawings the talented Year 11 VCD students have used grey lead pencils to represent metal, coloured pencils for glass and copic markers together with coloured pencils for wood.
