Welcome to the first Careers Newsletter for term three! I hope that you enjoyed the break as much as I did, and that students and parents are ready for a big term of growth, learning and planning for 2020. The focus for me this term is to ensure that students and families have access to all the information you might need to make informed decisions about the choices on offer for 2020.

It was great to meet so many Year 10 families at the information night/expo last Wednesday. Attending these events is a great first step in the process for selecting courses and subjects for next year. Other ways to keep informed include:

Read the newsletter! (well done)
Attend Connect classes and briefings/expos
Access MyNorthcoteHigh – Careers Page; Subject Selection Page
Read information provided through Connect classes
Attend university/TAFE open days
Check courses and prerequisites using the VTAC site
Discuss subjects and careers with people who can help you

The most important thing to remember throughout this process is to consider the things that students are good at and the things that they enjoy. Prerequisites are very important for direct entry to courses, however there are many pathways to different careers – and no decisions made now will be binding for life!

Students and their families can make appointments to see me to discuss issues with course selection or tertiary applications this term via the Careers page on MyNorthcoteHigh. If you make an appointment please ensure you attend, or let me know if you can’t. A number of students have not attended booked appointments, and this takes away opportunities for others. Thanks for your understanding.

A reminder that in addition to the Careers section of the school newsletter there is a weekly careers news update provided via My Northcote High Careers section – Career News. This is a good time of year to re-familiarise yourself with all the resources available to you on the careers page in My Northcote High.

Year 12 Students

Students in Year 12 will begin seriously planning their transition from school this term. The main focus will be completion of the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) registration and application process.

All Year 12s will be briefed on the process on Tuesday August 6th. All students should ensure they attend the briefing! Following this, students will have the opportunity to use Connect time to ask questions of their tutors and to work on their registration and application. Tutors will be tracking progress through all the steps, and referring students to Careers as needed.

Our goal is for ALL Year 12 students to complete this process BEFORE THE END OF TERM 3. This will allow students to fully focus on completion of coursework and exam preparation.

There will be a VTAC parent information session held on Thursday 8th August at the school. This will cover information on researching, applications, SEAS, scholarships, ATAR release and the offer process. You can book to attend this session via this link: https://www.trybooking.com/BEDMH

Year 12 students should be attending Open Days in August and developing their list of potential courses in the booklet they received late last term. Students should bring this booklet with them if they need to book an appointment to see me.

Melbourne Career Expo

Year 11 students will be attending the Melbourne Career Expo on Friday. This is a timely event, with so much going on for students with choices which might impact their futures.

For other students who wish to attend, the expo will run from July 26th to July 28th 2019 at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (10am - 4pm on Saturday and Sunday). The event will showcase around 150 exhibitors, and encompass all career opportunities from employment to education and training in the trades, corporate and professional sectors. Onsite you will find an array of career information as well as employment opportunities and information about the tertiary sector.

Thinking about a Gap year in the USA?

CAMP AMERICA will shortly begin recruiting young Australians who will be 18 years of age by June 1 2020 to participate as camp counsellors at summer camps. These camps will run from May through until August 2020. There will be an information session on Tuesday July 23rd from 6.30 til 7.30pm at Ibis Melbourne Victoria room (15-21 Therry St, Melbourne). AU PAIR IN AMERICA are looking for young people (18-26) who wish to live, study and travel in the US. Must have a minimum of 200 hours of childcare experience (babysitting, tutoring, coaching); have a driver’s licence and have completed minimum of Year 10. Student Exchange Opportunities

World Exchange Program (WEP) Australia is a not-for-profit student exchange organisation. They were recently awarded the title of ‘Leading Provider of Student Exchange Programs 2019’ by the Australian Enterprise Awards. There are a number of public exchange information sessions coming up: August 20th at 7pm in North Fitzroy, and July 30th at Greythorn Community Hub.
