The Black Throated Finch Project
Students from Northcote High School contributed over 30 Black Throated Finch Artworks to a collection of more than 1400 from across Australia.
The artworks were temporarily exhibited at the Tinning street gallery and have now been sent to politicians who have a key role with the proposed Adani mine.
There are less than 1,000 Black Throated Finches still alive, with most of them living in the area of the proposed Adani Carmichael mine. Adani agreed to set aside 2,000 hectares of quality habitat for the Black Throated Finch, however they have now cleared all of this. The current extinction crisis is happening under our watch and Australia is to blame. We have the highest mammalian extinction rate and the worst extinction rate for a ‘developing’ nation.
Thank you and congratulations to all students who contributed to this project, more events will follow, so stay informed about future events by coming to the weekly meetings in C1 during lunch or via social media on Instagram or Facebook.
This project has also caught the media’s attention, see articles below:

Green team & Friends Landcare Camp 2019 – Boho South
Thursday 12 (after lunch) – Saturday 14 September Cost $ 165 (TBC)
Since 2005 students from Northcote High School have been involved in Landcare activities at the school camp at Boho South and surrounding areas. For the past 6 years we have been working with the Regent Honeyeater Project near Benalla. (http://regenthoneyeater.org.au/)
We will again be working with them this year to help restore remnant box-ironbark habitat for endangered species, including the Regents Honeyeater. Activities will include ground preparation, planting, watering, mulching and guarding.
Students will stay at the school campsite at Boho South, this may be the last ever camp at this site as the school is investigating the future of the site and the 2020 Year 8 camps will not occur at the site next year. The school has been using the campsite since the late 1970’s.
The camp is open to all Green team members plus other interested students. For permission forms or further information please see:
