HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you and your family had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

During the break, I encountered a special person that reminded me of the impact we have on our students. My family and I were at my Father-in-law's home celebrating his 88th birthday when my niece arrived with her new boyfriend, Mitch. He looked familiar and very nervous. He gave me a big hug and asked, “Do you remember me, Mrs Chacon?” Mitch had been my Kindergarten student 16 years ago. He was the cuddliest and kindest student who cried most mornings.

He showed me a photo he had kept of us in Kindergarten. His mother, Jo, gave me this same photo, which my niece, Laura, had seen on my fridge. Mitch shared some lovely memories, but what resonated with me was his appreciation of the care he was given in Kindergarten. He remembered the cuddles when he cried, how I carried him up the stairs most days and that I let him sleep when he was tired. Mitch’s fondest memories were of the times I showed him care and kindness. His experience highlights the importance of continuing to provide a nurturing learning environment for our students at the College. Not a day goes by without a Junior School teacher meeting with me to discuss how they can best cater for our students’ individual wellbeing, and I praise them for their dedication and care for our students.

Early in Term 1, observations made by the educators across the Junior school revealed a need to develop student independence and increase engagement in learning. These findings led to the implementation of the 10 Steps to Teaching and Learning Independence model created by two experienced educators, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, (2014). This evidence-based approach scaffolded students’ development of strategies needed to learn effectively. These skills are taught explicitly, modelled and practised. The Junior School will continue to use this model to confer with groups, and individuals whilst the remaining students independently apply newly learnt skills to authentic tasks. This term, teachers will focus on differentiated learning through data-led flexible groups for Reading and Mathematics.

It was also wonderful to be able to invite Junior School parents to our Assembly this week and we look forward to many more such opportunities throughout the remainder of 2021.

The College is very excited to connect with our families through the community events such as Little TRAC-ers playgroup, parent-led learning and parent workshops.

We look forward to another exciting term of learning.
