CIS Football Cup

Last term, the Riverina Anglican College Open Girls soccer team, led by the Co-captains Zoe Jenkins and Abby Wood entered the CIS Football Cup for the first time. In round 1, The Riverina Anglican College defeated The Illawarra Grammar School. Both teams scored two goals (our scorers were Ines Treharne and Layla Almator), and then we went to penalty kicks. It was very tight but Bonny McKean did a fantastic job stopping a few goals and Tyla Smith scored our winning goal. The girls were very excited to make it to Round 2.

When we played Shellharbour in Round 2, unfortunately, we were defeated 1-3 even though Amelia Walker scored a great goal. Despite our disappointment, the girls focused on the positives and their progression as a team. I am very proud of this team and I am looking forward to coaching them for the Open competition next term.

I also would like to thank Mr Browning and Mr Begg for driving us and coping with the girls singing the whole way to Yass. Well done girls, you’re such a great and inspiring team!

Preston Butcher Cup CWWHSSA Touch Football Competition Report

It was wonderful to see 26 students turn up for the trials in 2021. In previous years, players who arrived at the trials automatically made the team due to limited numbers. As this is an Opens competition, all year levels were invited to trial and we had a great spread of interest amongst most year levels. Year 7 students new to secondary school and the College arrived looking nervous but showcased their ability and passion for touch football, with three students making the team; Georgie Hayes, Milla Pavitt and Marley Richards, all proving that they had what it takes to make an Open team.

Unfortunately, when the competition started, all of Year 7 were on camp so the girls couldn't play any round games! New uniforms arrived in time for the competition and the girls looked ready to play! These are the results;

In the first round game, we played Kooringal High School and came away with a win, 6 touchdowns to 1. The girls played well considering it was their first match and were without three of their team members.

In the second round game, we played Wagga Wagga Christian College. The girls had another convincing win, 11 touchdowns to 1. Combinations were beginning to develop with the ball moving freely on the field and runners moving nicely into gaps to score well deserved tries.

After the round games, The Riverina Anglican College progressed into the semis and played Mater Dei Catholic College. The game was much harder than the rounds, Mater Dei proving too strong in attack scoring 9 touchdowns to our 1. This resulted in us moving into the 3rd vs 4th playoff.

In the 3rd vs 4th playoff our Year 7’s were able to play and had their first taste of Open Touch Football. They were beaten by Wagga Wagga High School, but it is pleasing to note that we won’t lose any players in 2022 as we didn’t have any Year 12 players so the team should do well in the coming years with the development of a younger side.

Thanks to Mrs Maryanne Voss who managed the team and to the parents who were able to finally watch some games.

Hardy Shield CWWHSSA Rugby League Competition Report

It was a pretty excited group of young men from Years 10 to 12 who undertook the Hardy Shield campaign for 2021. After the College withdrew due to Covid in 2020, a solid squad of hardcore, occasional and complete novice rugby league players took on the might of Wagga High School and Mount Austin High in the Pool matches.

This challenge looked completely beyond us when Mount Austin led 16-0 10 minutes into the first game. With sheer guts and determination, we edged our way back into the game via the excellent leadership of our co-captains Jack Lloyd and Tom Fitzgerald. Jack Lloyd scored three tries and was ably supported by the efforts of his fellow forwards in helping create space for our outside backs to make inroads into the at times lackadaisical Mount Austin defence. George Carn managed to both tiptoe and blast through six defenders to score a remarkable try under the posts. Ultimately the score would end up 26 all in one of the more seesaw schoolboy football matches ever witnessed.

With Mount Austin High having beaten Wagga High by 16 points, the challenge for our next match was to beat Wagga High by more than that margin to proceed through to the finals. With three further tries by Jack Lloyd and a double to Dylan Edwards this was achieved. Again, the forwards paved the way, with solid defence being backed up by vigorous running and some excellent ball handling. The final score of 28-4 meant our Hardy Shield team was the first to progress in 6 years into the finals week as we finished top of Pool B.

After rain impacted the first week of the finals, the decision was made to collapse the semi-finals and finals into a single afternoon the following week. This daunting prospect would see us play 2020 champions Kooringal High School, in the first game, the winner of which would proceed through to the final. Games were also shortened, meaning we had to be completely on our game and efficient with our ball usage. Unlike the first two games, this wasn’t so much the case, and we paid the penalty with a lack of possession and an increasingly alarming scoreboard. Injuries had also cruelled the squad with many of our senior players carrying soft tissue injuries that meant we had even discussed forfeiting earlier in the day. Nevertheless, we soldiered on, and the grit and determination of this group of players made us proud. Ultimately the score would be 30-4.

After losing to the eventual competition winners we almost immediately played Kildare in the 3 vs 4 playoff. Kildare had been favourites heading into the competition and as such were somewhat shell-shocked to even be playing us. Our bodies were even more broken and sore than they had been in the match minutes earlier, but the overarching desire to not give in remained evident until the final bell. Ultimately despite us scoring early in the match, we were beaten by a well drilled, experienced team.

One of the key features of this campaign was the grit and determination of our team. Our relatively inexperienced front row of Flynn Packer and Lachlan Payne continually threw themselves into the fray, as did their second row partners in Gerard Okerenyang, Jack Lloyd and Shannon Steel. Rotating hookers Judd McLeod and Angus Randall also tackled everything that moved, with our rigid defence a key feature of all four games. Our halves, Harry Hayes and Tom Fitzgerald were key to feeding great ball to wider ball runners such as Dylan Edwards and Jack Flight. Sam McNaughton at fullback was a revelation, popping up all over the ground in tenacious defence and determined attack - he would be adjudged the best player for the College by the opposition coaches and was the well-deserved recipient of The Riverina Anglican College's best player.

Bring on Hardy Shield 2022!
