Swimming Carnival 2021
Perfect swimming conditions blessed the College on Monday 1 March in our second attempt to run this annual event for 2021. Wet and cold conditions hindered our ability to conduct the carnivals on the first occasion but nothing but sunshine welcomed us to the Oasis and Junee pools to participate in a COVID safe event in Week 6.
The non-competitive event held in Junee saw the majority of students attend. And why not? A warm day with music, races, novelties, slippery slides and plenty of opportunities to develop House spirit off campus. Whilst Covid hindered students from singing, cheering and chanting, it didn't stop them from dancing, clapping and smiling the day away. Students were provided ample opportunities to participate in the day with various offerings of aquatic activities throughout the day.
The competitive event held at the Oasis in Wagga had a much different tone. Competitive students who have been training for weeks and months were given the opportunity to put their training into practice, racing in their age groups to break records, swim personal best results, qualify for BISSA and be in the running for Age Champion. Congratulations to the following students who achieved Age Champion and Runners Up Age Champion for each age group:

Katrina Powell Shield - Open Girls Softball Competition Report
This term, 15 young women from Years 7-12 represented the College in softball during the Katrina Powell Shield. The competition was held at French Fields and consisted of three round-robin games which were then followed by finals. The team consisted of Hannah Billett (12), Georgia Hugler (12), Zoe Jenkins (12), Lucy McKelvie-Hill (12), Abby Wood (12), Samantha Klima (11), Paige Jessop (11), Casey Smith (11), Josie Curie (10), Aisha Farah (10), Ines Treharne (10), Amelia Humble (9), Tyla Smith (9), Maddy Angel (8), and Heidi Sarantakos (7).
In the first game, the College faced an experienced side from Mater Dei Catholic College. Against some accurate and fast-paced pitching, batting was difficult, and the innings often ended with runners stranded on base. In the field, our members were kept on their toes by some big hits and quick stealing and base running by Mater Dei. Highlights of the game included three strikeouts from pitcher/catcher duo Maddy and Samantha, catches by Georgia, Zoe and Tyla and hits to Aisha, Casey and Zoe. The final score was MDCC 15 – TRAC 2.
Game Two saw the College face Wagga Wagga High School. Strong efforts in the field by the opposition again limited our batting and scoring opportunities, however, safe hits by Zoe and Samantha and a two-base hit by Lucy allowed us to score. In the field, selective batting by Wagga High put pressure on pitcher, Heidi, and catcher, Samantha, however, they maintained their positive spirits and were well supported by the rest of the team. Heidi took two catches, Tyla took a catch and Amelia and Georgia teamed up in a juggling act to catch out another batter. The final score was WWHS 18 – TRAC 2.
In the final round-robin game, the College faced an experienced and undefeated Kooringal High School side. Big hits by the opposition gave our players plenty of opportunities to practise their fielding and collaboration skills. Lucy and Georgia had a try at pitching and catching respectively and were able to make two quick outs from fly balls. We had mixed success in the batting box but were again able to score two runs from hits by Paige and Hannah. It was lovely to see exceptional sportsmanship from Kooringal who helped encourage and mentor our newer players. The final score was KHS 21 – TRAC 2.
The College faced Mater Dei in a final match to determine third place in the competition. Mater Dei batted first and came out strongly, batting in 11 runs and leaving us still searching for a third out when they declared. Our turn at bat was short-lived when pitcher Charli Hall quickly dismissed the first three batters. Back in the field, Zoe took an excellent catch at centre-field to get our first out, but Mater Dei continued to bat strongly and scored another 7 runs. A change of pitcher resulted in a much more successful turn at bat for us. Casey and Paige’s selective batting earned them both a walk to first base before they were able to steal their way home. In the third innings, excellent fielding by the team including a catch by Heidi and great teamwork by Aisha and Amelia limited Mater Dei’s batting resulting in them scoring just two runs. Back in the batting box, Lucy had an incredible three-base hit to centre-field but was left stranded as Mater Dei quickly collected three outs. Mater Dei were able to score three more runs in their final turn at bat before the umpire called time and game. The final score was MDCC 23 – TRAC 2.
In the grand final match Wagga Wagga High Score defeated Kooringal 5-0 in a close and highly competitive game.
Whilst not shown in the score, our students are to be commended for their efforts throughout the competition. They raised the bar in regard to their teamwork, support of each other and sportsmanship, and we are very proud of their achievements. A huge thank you to scorer Mrs Judith Cottee and base coach Mr Alex Sarantakos for their assistance throughout the competition and their support of the team.
Try-outs for the 2022 team will be held in Term 4 2021.

Byrnes Shield Open Boys Cricket - Champions!
The Open Boys cricket team won this year's Byrnes Shield T20 competition by going through the competition undefeated.
Their first round match was against the team that defeated them in the final last year Mater Dei Catholic College. The College defeated MDCC bowling them out for 79 runs and then chasing the total down in 17 overs ending at 4 for 82. Most bowlers took wickets but the standout performer was Judd McLeod, with figures of 3 for 9 runs. Ryan Collins was the best of the batsmen finishing 48 not out.
The second round was against Wagga High School, WWHS batted first and made 3 for 119 from their 20 overs, with one WWHS batter finishing 84 not out. After being 3 wickets for 6 runs after 4 overs, Joe Perryman and Bill Glanvill put on an undefeated partnership of 115 runs, which saw us pass the WWHS score in the 17 over. Joe made 59 not out and Bill 54 not out.
This saw us qualify 1st for the finals and being in the top pool, saw us matched up again against MDCC. Once again MDCC batted first and a good all round display from our bowlers saw us restrict MDCC to 6 for 105. This should not have been a daunting run chase, however after losing 2 wickets for 2 runs we were in a difficult position. However, a steady, well constructed innings by Ryan Collins (33 n.o) and a superb innings by Bill Glanvill (67 n.o) saw us pass the WWHS total in the 16th over with still the loss of only 2 wickets.
This brought us to the final and with WWHS defeating Kildare CC in the other semi-final saw us once again playing against WWHS. This time we won the toss and elected to bat, reaching the 12th over before losing a wicket, putting on 96 runs. Ryan Collins made a great score of 25 runs. At this stage Joe Perryman was joined at the crease by Bill Glanvill and the two put on another 110 runs in 8 overs in one of the most dominant batting displays by a college team in memory. Bill ended the innings on 54 not out whilst Joe was dismissed in the second last over for a brilliant 105 runs. The first century by a Riverina Anglican College batsman in a T20 match and to be done in a final made it an even better innings. The College reached 3 for 206 and when WWHS finished their innings at 1 for 147, the Brynes Shield was TRAC’s. Luke Fellows bowled 4 overs 1 for 10 runs and Lachlan Payne 3 overs 2 for 15 in very good bowling displays.
I want to thank all players who have been involved in the squad this year and especially thank the co captains Joe and Bill for doing such a great on field job, well done boys!

Douglas Shield Semi Final win - now into the Grand Final!!
The Douglas Shield Open Boys cricket team travelled to Sutherland Oval to play against Innaburra in the Semi Final of the Douglas Shield 2020-2021 competition. After winning the toss we elected to bowl. This proved to be a perfect choice with Luke Fellows and Billy Glanvill opening the bowling and taking an early wicket (B. Glanvill) in the second over (LBW), Innaburra was 1/6 after two overs. In the third over, Fellows bowled a screamer which was caught beautifully by Joe Perryman. The boys took wicket after wicket until Inaburra were all out for 21 runs only completing 20 overs. College Captain, Joe Perryman came to the crease and made the runs easily, finishing the match early with a convincing win. The team will now travel to Parkes next week to take on Calrossy - Tamworth in the Grand Final.

On Wednesday 10th March, The Open Girls soccer team went to Yass to host their first game in the CIS Football Cup against The Illawarra Grammar School. Both teams scored two goals (our scorers were Ines Treharne and Layla Almator), and then we went to penalty kicks. It was very tight but Bonny McKean did a fantastic job stopping a few goals and Tyla Smith scored our winning goal. The girls are very excited to make it to round 2 and are looking forward to playing their next game against Shellharbour. Well done girls, you’re such a great and inspiring team!
