INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

Year 12 IB update

Our Year 12 IB students have had a busy term, with examinations taking place over the next two weeks to assess progress. Here are some of the tasks the students have been working on this term:

  • Mathematics exploration – Students have constructed a written report that explores an application or model used in mathematics in an area of interest. The focus areas some students selected included an investigation of the mathematics of music, a statistical analysis of sport, climate data analysis and computer modelling in artificial intelligence. Students demonstrate mathematical communication through graphs, equations, data tables and calculations and reflect on the approached used in the exploration.
  • Musical links investigation – Students have written a report that investigates the musical connections between pieces from two distinct musical cultures. Students describe, analyse and examine the similarities and differences in the musical elements of each piece. One student has compared 80s Thrash Metal with traditional Altai Folk music and another has compared Northern Indian classical music with 50s jazz.
  • Language orals – Students have had another opportunity to develop their skills in speaking French and Spanish. Students are presented with a visual stimulus and have 15 minutes to prepare a short speech in the target language to describe the stimulus and engage in a discussion of the theme presented.
  • Sciences investigation – Students have begun preparations for an individual scientific investigation for Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Systems and Societies, Physics and Sports, Health and Exercise Science. The investigation may include laboratory-based experimentation or database analysis. Planning is underway, with experiments due to begin in Week 9.
