Parents - a Vital Component of the Success Triumvirate

I had the pleasure of presenting to the Year 11 cohort of 2021 and their parents on Wednesday evening of last week. One of the silver linings of the COVID period has been being able to utilise technology to stay connected; although I do miss seeing the faces new and old in the crowd and the ensuing conversations that naturally occur on such evenings. The various links and resources from these presentations will be sent to Year 11 IB and HSC parents over the course of the next week.

One of the key messages I provide to parents, in any forum at any opportunity, is the degree to which they are a vital component of their child’s development as a student. The College’s utilisation of the Elevate platform allows scientifically researched and engaging presentations to students and parents - it was great to see dozens of parents attend the previous session on time management last month. This week saw the second in the series occur, focusing on Tech Devices - setting boundaries and promoting self-regulation with teens. The webinar helped to answer questions around 'how much screen-time is too much", how to create positive habit-loops with your child, and what apps and technology you can use to help your child, rather than hinder them. A link to the video recording and resources will be provided early next week and I will contact parents of Years 7-12 with the link to the video and resources. Please also keep an eye out on Facebook and via Compass for further details regarding upcoming parent evenings with Elevate Education- these are for Secondary students only, although Year 6 parents may also glean some handy tips.

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss learning and what it looks like for your child, the first point of contact is their teacher- we love having these conversations, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have queries or concerns. As always, I too am more than happy to discuss your child’s learning and in particular the vital role you can play in enhancing your child’s learning. Anthony.Heffer@trac.nsw.edu.au

Yours in learning
