Visual Arts

This week in Art we are finishing up some amazing projects.

Foundation students have been working on their cutting and pasting skills. They used the book 'Click, Clack, Moo' as inspiration to draw a cow. They layered a number of different papers to create a hillside where the cow could live. Next week, they will be creating monsters from the book 'Monsters Love Underpants'.

Junior School are well underway with their paper mache creations. Bowls and ice creams are nearly ready to be painted. Students have demonstrated great resilience when working with paper mache as it can be quite time consuming and frustrating at times. We can't wait to see the end results.

Middle School have had a disrupted few weeks due to Curriculum Day, Labour Day and Camp, but are slowly working through their clay projects. They have created some fantastic tribal inspired masks and coil pots. They learnt how to score the clay and use slip to join two pieces together.

Senior School are wowing us with their collages. They have nearly completed their animals and are moving on to create a cat or dog by painting their own papers using watercolour and oil pastel resist. They experimented with line work and were inspired by the type of music we listened to while drawing. Keep an eye out for these pieces once finished... I am sure they will be amazing!!!

Help needed: We are looking for a few lovely parents who would be willing to clean wooden rolling pins (approx 25) and chalk blackboards (approx 40) that have dry clay and old Plasticine on them. You may need to give them a good scrub in some hot soapy water to help remove the old residue. We are also needing 12 x PVA bottles refilled. If you are able to help out, please send me an email to rebecca.bertrand@education.vic.gov.au with what you would like to clean and how many. THANK-YOU!!!!

REMINDER - Please send an art smock for your child

Science

This fortnight in the Science Hub we have continued to build on what makes a good scientist and how vital the scientific method is to our work.

Foundation students have worked on identifying what is needed and not needed to stay alive and strengthen their reasoning behind their decisions. We have had so much fun with our little class pets.

Junior school have identified the parts of a butterfly and have added thorax, abdomen, pupa and lava to their scientific vocabulary. We have worked a lot on creating labelled diagrams and extending this learning by adding a statement to what we have observed. We were able to combine a mindful moment this week with a science lesson when we created butterflies that were coloured in to camouflage with their environment.

Middle school have continued explored classification of animals and we have focused on groups such as vertebrate and invertebrate and how scientists use this to classify animals into groups such as mammals, birds, fish, insects and so forth. We can also state that ants, millipedes, flies and birds as being the most common animals found at school.

Seniors have continued our long- term experiment to see if washing our hands is important. Whilst there have been screams of disgust at how mouldy our bread has become it has raised many questions about variables. Such as if the bread in the bag was handled with clean hands did the person use soap or just waster and is that why we have different results? Why are there different coloured moulds? and were the tongs as clean as we thought? We read a book called “do not lick this book” by Idan Ben-Barak. It’s a fascinating story about a microb called Min that goes on an adventure. We now know what our skin, teeth, paper and t-shirt look like under a microscope.

Celebrating Harmony Week

It is hard to believe this term is almost over. Our students celebrated Harmony Week this week. Harmony Day/Week is a time to celebrate cultural diversity and cultural respect. The students undertook a variety of fun activities, were read stories and were given an orange ribbon to wear, which is the official colour of Harmony Day.

This week

Our foundation students will be looking at the meaning of right and wrong and will undertake some fun activities linked with this. Our Juniors students will continue looking at feelings and how this can impact those around us. Middle students will be looking at different cultural practices in Australia and abroad and will undertaking some research of their own. Lastly, Seniors will be looking at natural disasters and how this impacts our planet.

Have a great week everyone.

Physical Education

Term one flew by; it is now time to have an amazing break and relax; to come back fresh and ready to learn. I am really looking forward to next term with The Whole School Cross Country and Whole School Athletics Day. Make sure you stay fit and healthy ready to compete in both!

Foundation has been working hard over the past weeks on their overarm throw. They have focused on teamwork and building skills to work in pairs; turn-taking, sharing, communication and cooperation. These skills will be developed and used throughout their lives. The students thoroughly enjoyed playing octopus; we are beginning to understand the game rules and will continue to play this in term two.

Junior has worked on their overarm throw to refine their skills. They have enjoyed warming up with Octopus as it is their favourite. We have also used games to practice their overarm throw, such as dodgeball, clean up my backyard and monster ball. Dodgeball is a group favourite. Next term, we will work on the Two-Handed Side-Arm Strike playing games, including modified Tball and Rounders.

Middle students have enjoyed working on their Two-handed side-arm strike; rounders and Tball were a hit (no pun intended). Students have developed the ability to successfully perform the Two-handed side-arm strike during target practice and games. Showing amazing teamwork and sportsmanship by supporting and encouraging each other.

Senior has had an amazing two weeks supporting and encouraging one another. They have also been working on their Two-handed side-arm strike. The senior students have worked super hard on sportsmanship and have shown excellence, resilience and respect to their peers throughout our games. They were awarded a wing to support our school values and ensure our classroom environment is safe, secure, and supportive. Our senior students have also be kicking goals with interschool sports, having a few wins over the last two weeks. Keep up the fantastic work, Seniors!

I would like to wish all our families a safe and happy holiday, I hope the Easter Bunny treats you well!

Thanks
