What's happening in Foundation

We cannot believe that Foundation have almost finished their first term of school!! We are so proud of the respect, excellence and resilience that each Foundation student has been demonstrating throughout this term. Now that we know our classroom routines, we have been thinking about how we can be a 5 star learner each day. 5 star learners contribute, concentrate, collaborate, commit and communicate their thinking clearly. It has been great to see Foundation applying this to their learning, making sure to try their best even if it is hard.

LITERACY: In literacy, we have been focusing on making predictions when we are reading. We have used the pictures and the words to make a prediction about what will happen in a story, what the characters might do and even how the characters might feel.

We have also been focusing on identifying the difference between our letters, words and a whole sentence. Foundation have been using their fingers to point to each word while reading and have hunted for full stops as that tells us it is the end of the sentence.

NUMERACY: In numeracy, we have been practicing subitising. Subitising is the automatic recognition of a number of objects in a small group. Foundation have challenged themselves by not counting each object and trusting that they can recognise the number straight away. I encourage you to continue this practice at home with every day objects (eg, fingers held up, cubes of chocolate, forks for the table, magnets on a fridge etc.) Start with small groups and build up to bigger numbers.

Fine Motor Skills

This term we have been working hard on building our fine motor skills through various activities, including: cutting practice, playdough words/pictures, lacing shoes, lacing beads, peg boards etc. This is an important skill for Foundation students to develop as this strengthens their hand muscles which assists with their writing skills.

This week we practiced our cutting skills by creating our own lions with big, fluffy manes.

Superhero Day

What a fun day we had dressing as superheroes! It was a fantastic way to celebrate 3000 acknowledgements for respect, excellence and resilience! We enjoyed brainstorming all the super powers we could have and what our super names could be.

Term 2 attendance

Foundation will be attending full time next term.
