Primary Years Program at GGLPS

GGLPS teaches the Australian curriculum using the Primary Years Program (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate as a framework to impart this. There are many different aspects to the Teaching and Learning program of the school and these are some of the rich learning experiences in which the students are involved.

The Learner Profile

What does a learner look like? What does a learner do? What are the characteristics of a learner?

These questions have been carefully considered by the IB, International Baccalaureate and are important considerations for all IB schools. The IB has responded to these questions by creating a ‘learner profile’. The learner profile is a feature of all sections of IB Education from early learning to primary and secondary schooling and beyond.

The IB learner profile is summarised as:

  • Representing a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that include intellectual, personal, emotional, and social growth;
  • Developing and demonstrating the attributes of the learner profile to provide an important foundation for international mindedness;
  • Supporting students to take action for positive change.

From ‘PYP: The Learner’ IB, 2018

The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes and we believe that these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national, and global communities.

As IB learners, we strive to display, grow and reflect on being:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

At GGLPS, the IB learner profile is part of our student's learning. It is present in:

  • Units of inquiry: teachers work with students to nominate, focus on, develop and reflect upon, one or two learner profile attributes in each unit of work. Students may set goals according to the focus that these attributes give;
  • Reflecting on learning and being part of a learning community. The learner profile attributes allow great starting points for conversations that enable students to think about who they are as learners along with how they are working and learning with others. They also offer context in discussions about how students can be positive members of our community, working to bring about change;
  • The learner profile is displayed in classrooms and throughout the school so it can be referred to.

The IB describes the aim of the learner profile is to: ‘develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.’ IB learner profile 2017
