International Women’s Day: #Choosetochallenge

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a world-wide initiative that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of all women. It’s also a day to advocate for equality.

Here at Greensborough College we choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We choose to celebrate women’s achievement to create an inclusive community.

Why, in 2021 do we still need to focus on Gender Equality in Australia? Here are just a few stats*…

  • Women’s full time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were 86% of that of men.
  • On average, women spend nearly 32 hours a week on household labour when compared with men, who on average complete 19 hours.
  • Women are still under-represented in traditionally male-dominated industries and managerial roles.
  • Intimate partner violence is the third greatest health risk factor for women aged 25-44.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 32 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence when compared to non-indigenous women.
  • 1 in 5 Australian women (18.4%) has experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we have a few activities coming up at GC…

  • At the library, students can view the IWD book display of inspiring Women Authors and while you’re at it, why not borrow one to take home and read? Did you also know, that by accessing the Greensborough College ePlatform at https://greensc.eplatform.co/, you have access to hundreds of books and you can even download audiobooks as well the e versions! (Username: Student Code. Password: Library1)
  • Also, whilst in the library checking out the display, pick up the #choosetochallenge selfie cards (in groups or individually) and pose for a selfie to be displayed on the GC Instagram account. This will be available during lunch time on Friday 5th March! #IWD2021 #choosetochallenge
  • Connect classes will be running a #choosetochallenge lesson in week 6 which incorporates the key themes of the Victorian’s Government’s Respectful Relationships program and why it’s important to challenge gender-based stereotypes. By explicitly teaching gender equality, we are aiming for full equality in the future!
  • Stay tuned for more exciting works coming to Greensborough College soon!
