At Hackham East Primary School
Hello everyone! My name is Melissa Thiele and I am The Arts teacher this year. After 6 years of teaching Middle Primary, I am thrilled to be teaching this role as this part of the curriculum is certainly a passion of mine.
This term, classes are focussing on the Visual Arts component and exploring the art of collage. Collage comes from the French word, “coller” which means “to glue” or, more specifically, to glue onto a backing. Each week, students are creating collages using different techniques.
Through observing illustrators’ styles in picture books, Junior Primary students are learning skills of tearing, overlapping and using shapes to make their own artworks.
The Year 3/4 classes are exploring shape, line, space and colour through studying the style used by the famous French artist, Henri Matisse.
Our Upper Primary students are considering contrast, positive/negative shapes, colour schemes and photomontage as well as looking at works from modern collage artists from around the globe.
We are also using a wide range of materials including types of paper (tissue, cellophane, wrapping paper, foil, magazines), natural objects (leaves, pebbles, shells), dry food (pretzels, pasta), etc to make our creations. Please take a look at these photos from our amazing HEPS collage artists.
