We are pleased with the excellent progress our Reception students are showing as they 'learn how to learn’ in PE. The students have responded to explicit modelling of problem solving, applying resilience and keeping each other safe through a series of tag and movement games. As the term progresses all junior primary students will practice balance with the Year 1/2’s being stretched to maintain balance while controlling a basketball while bouncing it.
Our focus thus far in upper primary has been around District Athletics Day trials with students trialling for the 100m, 800m, long jump, and high jump.
This week we will begin a unit on Orienteering with specialist instructors attending 1 day a week over the next 4 weeks to coach our upper primary students in the literacy and numeracy of orienteering and how that relates to map reading.
This will be run in conjunction with a unit on soft ball. Trials for the District Athletics softball team are underway with the tournament to be held over 3 days from 29/3 to the 31/3. Please contact Mrs Martin should your child wish to register their interest in trialling.
We are VERY EXCITED to announce that former Olympian and Captain of the Australian Women’s Basketball team and Adelaide Lightning; Rachael Sporn will be visiting our school on Friday 12/3 to work with our year 3-7 students around goal setting.
A change in date has been made from our usual District Cross Country event, moving from the conclusion of Term 1 to early in Term 2. In previous years we have held two early morning training sessions each week to help build our students fitness prior to the event. The science of aerobic fitness is that it needs to be built on within every 72 hours otherwise the progress in how effective our body becomes at transferring oxygen into energy gets lost. Therefore the holiday break will be an issue if students don’t continue to train. We are open to suggestions from the families of students who intend to compete before we make our decision on what our training schedule might look like this year.
