French at

Hackham East Primary School

Bonjour à tous! Hello everyone!

We have had a fantastique start to French this year, with all classes and students showing their School Values and using the Golden Rule. It’s been so wonderful to see everyone again and to meet our new students. Bienvenue to our Reception students and new families.

In our first lessons, students were able to explore their new French classroom space and learn about this year’s routines and expectations. A few new additions have been “Écris à Madame (write to Madame), “La Personne Secrète” (The Secret Person) and our “Non-negotiable Words” board. We also have a wonderful Learning Street space, which students can use for calming time, early finishing tasks and small group work.

Moving into the term, our Castle students have been learning and revising simple greetings, introducing themselves, colours and numbers to 20. The Yr 1/2 classes are also learning a song called, “La Pomme est Rouge” to perform at a later date.

Stillwell classes have practiced greetings, introducing themselves and writing simple sentences using colour adjectives and familiar nouns. They have also spent time exploring the French iPad apps, such as DuoLingo, French Builder 1 and French Pairs.

Holly students have spent time looking more deeply into sentence structures. They are learning that adjectives have to agree in number and gender with the noun they modify. Using this knowledge, students are forming sentences to describe the colours of a variety of singular and plural objects. They are becoming more aware of which nouns are masculine and which are feminine through use of French dictionaries and Google translate.

Later in the term all classes will be learning about the celebration of Pâques (French Easter) and how French people traditionally celebrate the holiday.

I look forward to the coming year and sharing future learning with you all.

Merci! , Madame Mawson
