Teaching and Learning

Room 4

Through our Maths lessons, we have been investigating time and how clocks record time. We use model clocks to show where the hands sit at any particular points in time and record our findings.

Some students are telling time to the nearest hour, some to the nearest half hour and some to the minute.

We calculate how much time passes between 2 points in time and convert different times from analog to digital.

Soon we will explore calendars and learn different addition and subtraction strategies to determine the passage of time over longer periods.—Mr. Faehrmann

こんにちは!Hello!

Did you know that the 3rd of March was Girl's Day in Japan? Japanese Girls' Day, also known as the Doll's Festival, is celebrated on March 3 to pray for the health and happiness of young girls in Japan. Hinamatsuri, the name of the celebration in Japan, is marked by families displaying a set of traditional and very precious dolls in the house. These dolls represent the Japanese Royal Court and the two dolls at the top of the display are the Emperor and Empress. The young girls may also enjoy an afternoon tea with friends serving special food delicacies that are both beautifully presented and delicious.

Room 7 and 8 learnt about this day and then worked in small groups to create a model of the Emperor and Empress doll. They had lots of fun creating and when they had finished, they donated their doll display to another class in the school. Happy Hinamatsuri!

Science News

Last week the Year 6/7 students got to listen to a guest speaker, Linda Durham talk about the coastal erosion project at West Beach. They then went for a beach walk where Linda pointed out all of the areas on the beach that have been affected by coastal erosion. It was a fantastic day and the students learnt a lot from Linda’s expertise.

They will then begin their STEM projects where they will present a strategy that can solve the problem of coastal erosion. They will also work in groups to design their own coastal erosion experiment to see which strategy is the most effective.

Beach Volleyball

On Friday of Week 6, Volleyball SA hosted a Beach Volleyball tournament at Glenelg Beach. West Beach Primary School were in full flight with 14 teams and 61 students from years 4-7. We had over 20 parents helping during the day with supervision, transport and umpiring which is an incredible effort. A big thanks to all that helped during the day. We had 2 teams come 2nd in their respective grades, and we saw a whole bunch of exciting Beach volleyball. Well done WBPS!

Lacrosse Carnival

Last Friday (Week 7) Glenelg Lacrosse Club put on an excellent event for Primary students in both the 4/5 and 6/7 age groups. West Beach entered 8 teams and had 60 students participating in the event. Once again, we couldn’t have participated without the support of the parents and staff who were willing to give up their time to supervise and help out during the day, so thank you!!

From a results standpoint, we had 2 teams finish 3rd in the bronze medal matches, the 4/5 Girls and the 6/7 Boys. A special mention to the 6/7 Boys who were undefeated all day and were unlucky not to make finals due to a scoring percentage on the premiership table. They had a phenomenal day playing with true sportsmanship and class. Some seriously good Lacrosse was on display from both teams.

Our 6/7 Girls were on fire all day and took out the Gold medal match with a 9-3 win against Immanuel College. The Girls played with grit, determination, and tactical knowledge from start to finish on the 32-degree day. Some incredible individual efforts and teamwork saw these girls add yet another trophy to now very full (potentially overflowing) trophy cabinet at WBPS. A well-deserved win and a big congratulation to our 6/7 Girl Lacrosse Champions! Well done!

Airport District Swim Team

A big congratulations to Tyson Dobie, Zane Rooney and Zara Dobie who will be representing the Airport District at the State Swim Carnival next week! A massive achievement making the team and we have no doubt you will swim well!

Jump Rope for Heart Updates

Since our recent Jump Rope for Heart Demo Team Performance on Tuesday, the students of WBPS have been skipping like champions. Inspired from the High Velocity Jump Team from Woodend Primary School who came to our school to perform, deliver workshops, and tell us more about why the Heart Foundation is so important to those suffering from heart conditions.

The improvements in such a short time have been incredible, the tricks have been great to watch during our recess and lunch time breaks. With such an uptake of student interest, we have decided to host a Jump Rope for Heart Celebration Event. On Thursday of Week 11, students will have an opportunity to showcase their skipping skills in front of the entire school. We will also celebrate and award the students who have fundraised the most for the JRH Foundation. More information to come…

Parents and families can get involved by skipping at home or fundraising here: www.jumprope.org.au/parents

On Tuesday the 16th of March our school was visited by Woodhead Primary’s Jump Rope For Heart. During the visit, we watched a performance of varying jump rope tricks.

After the performance, the students were split into nine groups in which they did a circuit, rotating clockwise every two minutes. They learnt a new trick at each station.

Some of the tricks include long rope, double duch, toed, releases, pair skipping, side swing jumps, rope swing and catch, leg movements whilst jumping and double unders. You can sign your kids up at www.jumprope.org.au/parents
