From the Principal

Term 1, Week 8, Kevin Kennedy

Dear Parents and Carers,

Site Improvement Plan- Phonics

All public schools have a Site Improvement Plan or SIP as we commonly refer to it. The SIP identifies several  goals based on the schools performance data from test such as NAPLAN, Phonics Screening and a number of others.  Analysis of our data has identified the need for a greater focus on the teaching and learning of phonics. As a result we have hired a speech pathologist to  build the expertise of teachers to plan and implement differentiated, data driven and evidence informed reading practice, including synthetic phonics, oral language and phonological awareness.

Developing teachers understanding of student learning and expanding their strategies for thinking, learning and working collaboratively when teaching reading (phonics) then we will see an increase level of achievement.

We are in the early stages of the program (the data review stage) but so far it has been well received by teachers, with some interesting and informative information being shared and discussed.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Once again this year, West Beach Primary School is using an online parent interview booking system which will enable parents to book interview times and receive instant email confirmation of their booking. The interview period is over two weeks from the 22nd of March to the 1st of April. If you would like to book a time to meet with the Japanese, Art, PE and Science teachers please contact the school to organise a time as they are not part of the online booking system.

Anti-Bullying Policy

Friday the 19th March is the National Day for Action (NAD) against Bullying and Violence. Our Well Being Coordinator, Tina Mouzakitis  will be sending home information about the day and the schools approach to bullying, it includes a useful guide should you find your child is being bullied or harassed.  Staff, students and family members all have a role to play in preventing bullying and harassment in our schools. Please familiarise yourself with these documents and do not hesitate to contact the school should you have a questions or queries or to discuss any specific incidents of bullying or harassment that you are aware of.

Should you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Kevin Kennedy
