Hardware and Software

Students in years 9 and 10, began this term by developing their understanding of computer hardware and software. Our students had the opportunity to dismantle old desk top computer towers and cataloging the components that they discovered inside.

We had Mr. Steven Barclay and Mr. Steven Lovegrove join these classes as guests to support students in developing their understanding of what each of the components where, and how they functioned. Students engaged with this hands-on activity and experienced being able to physically identify the parts, their looks and in some cases, dismantle the component themselves.

Mr. Steven Barclay worked with a range of students to pull apart an HDD and SSD hard drive, so students could visually see how each hard drive type was constructed and worked.

2021 Yearbook Covers

Students in years 9 and 10 have been assigned the yearbook cover challenge.

These students began the unit by exploring the concept of data collection through identifying methods of data collection, types of data collection, and questioning techniques. Using their developing understanding, students identified the stakeholders for the Peterborough High School Yearbook and created a survey to collect information about what a selected range of stakeholders would like to see or have included on the yearbook cover for 2021.

Through investigating existing designs and collecting data from stakeholders, students have begun to create their own designs for the Peterborough High School 2021 Yearbook cover. This will consist of a two-page spread (A3), which will include the front cover, spine, and back cover of the yearbook.

Once all year 9 and 10 students have completed their yearbook cover designs, all designs will be uploaded as a Google form poll on our Peterborough High School Facebook page. This will give all parents, students, staff, and community members of Peterborough the opportunity to vote on the design they would most like to see on the cover of the 2021 Yearbook for Peterborough High School.

Wood Tech

This term, the year 10 wood tech students have been hard at work, as they continue their workshop journey. They have been challenged this term to develop their skills and application of workshop processes and practices and to create their own product designs.

Students were tasked with a cabinet project. They were required to complete the cabinet frames as their skills and application task, and through the construction of the two frames students have learnt how to create a mortise and tenon joint, and they have continued to develop their skills using a range of machines and tools, include but not limited to, the bandsaw, drill press, disc sander, compound mitre saw, and chisels. Students have also had the opportunity to develop new skills in using the drum sander and mortiser machine.

Through the use of the technologies design process, students have had the opportunity to design and plan the look and function of their product. Students have designed projects that range from tv cabinets and make-up desks to bedside tables and kitchen trolleys.

All of the year 10 students have used their critical and creative thinking skills to design unique and amazing product ideas.
