Year 11 VCAL camp – Cathedral Ranges

On 11th and 12th February, the Year 11 VCAL students travelled to the Cathedral Ranges for an overnight camp. The purpose of the camp was for students to get to know each other and develop peer relationships. After arriving at the camp site, the students needed to work together in order to get their tents up and set up camp. For some students, they had never been camping before and it was quite a new experience for them. For many students, just using a drop toilet was a difficult obstacle to accomplish. Once all set up, we went for a hike and we walked through the beautiful national park. At the end of the very tiring walk, on a very hot day, the students soaked in a beautiful, freezing cold stream for a while, before setting up for dinner.

Once the daylight disappeared, many of the students played 40-40 and really enjoyed their time together. After a very wet night, we packed up the camp site, only to re-erect them back at school, so that they could dry.

Fit2Drive

On Tuesday, 9th March, the Year 11 VCAL students were involved in an incursion from the Fit2Drive team. The students have been learning about road safety and the incursion provided the students with many different road safety scenarios that they may encounter in the future. It allowed for a lot of group discussion and conversation amongst the students. We are hoping that opportunities like this, will better prepare our students for their upcoming journey into driving cars. As part of the incursion, Dave Smith, from the Narre Warren Police Station, came to speak to the students to talk about the Victorian road statistics, road rules and expectations for new drivers on the road. He also provided a lot of his time for the students to ask questions.

It was a great opportunity for the students to be involved in. It gave them a better insight of the dangers on the road and provided them with strategies for safer driving practices for the future.

Year 12 VCAL – cultural cooking

Last week, the Year 12 VCAL class were given the opportunity to participate in some cultural cooking, to support a cultural diversity unit we are currently studying in class. We have such an amazing varieties of cultures within the school and we were so fortunate to have some of our staff, work with our students, teaching them how to cook their cultural dishes. Ms El-Kalil introduced the students to Lebanon, with the students cooking beef koftas, taboulli salad and hommus. They also cooked a lamb biriyani dish, with Mr Padayachee, a traditional South African dish.

Students were very appreciative of the time in the kitchen, taking their new skills home to share with their families.
