Middle School

Year 9 MyFuture

The Myself subject My Future is a wonderful subject as it contributes to the student's many life experiences. It is all about planning and being more responsible. It also coaches us on how to get ready for the real world. During my future, we are given a lot of exposure to what life is like for adults.

For instance, when we are in class we prepare a portfolio. We fill this portfolio with certificates, ideas, reflections and tasks. Some of these tasks include learning to write cover letters and resumes. In addition, we also prepare for an interview with a teacher. This experience is even more useful as it teaches us on the Dos and Don'ts of an interview.

On the other hand, we also get to go on our self-planned excursions. Our My Future group has attended 4 excursions. Firstly, at Aquarena, we received a certificate in water safety. Also career-wise, we learnt about the job of being a lifeguard.

Secondly,  The police station excursion was a new program that had been created between the Year 9s and Victorian Police. During this excursion, we were able to analyse the environment of the Police Station as well as the equipment. We also learnt about their normal routines and how they deal with criminals in the precinct.

Thirdly, during the fire station excursion, we were all fascinated about how dedicated and passionate people who were working at the fire station, were about their job. They spoke to us about how they have to always be ready for an emergency. Although the best part was that everyone there was like a big family, they have roast dinners together and even stay overnight for some shifts.

Lastly, we attended the Box Hill TAFE excursion. During the excursion, we were able to see the many facilities found in the TAFE such as the beauty, engineering and construction. We all also got an idea of what TAFE is like and more of us now have plans to go to TAFE next year.

As said in the name, the My Future program is there to help our future. Whether it's making a resume or going on an excursion. It gives us experiences about how to act in our community. It's a program that gives skills that will definitely be used today and after we leave Doncaster Secondary College.
