Swinburne Italian Poetry Competition

This year for the first time in many years, we entered over 40 years 7 & 8 students in the Swinburne Italian Poetry Competition. As luck would have it, the external examiner sent by Swinburne University was Laura Cannistra. She was a student at DSC who graduated in 2009. She was college vice-captain & I taught her in Italian when she was in year 8!

Interview with former DSC student Matthew Majka - Class of 2004

Matthew Majka, 2004 graduate, believes passion keeps you “grounded, happy, focused and can improve your overall quality of life”. For him, passion is not only his career as an exercise physiologist but also in competitive breakdancing and basketball. It is this combination of passion and happiness in both his place of work and within other activities that sustain him and provide a sense of fulfilment.

Having completed his Masters in Exercise Physiology, Matthew worked in a hospital and clinical setting in physical therapy departments before starting his own business Empower Health Concepts. His business focuses on athlete development, injury treatment and management as well as quality care and outcomes of his patients.

Matthew has also heavily been involved in breakdancing for over the last 15 years. He has toured around Australia with Beyond Blue as a full-time hip-hop and breakdancer, performing at half time at the AFL, NBL and Australian Open. He has taught and performed at music festivals and rural indigenous schools in QLD, NT and WA.

Matthew’s fondest memories of DSC include a wide variety of things from the supportive staff that facilitated a “great balance of learning, discipline & freedom” to the salad rolls and chicken nuggets from the school canteen!
