First People’s exhibition at Melbourne Museum

Year 11 English Language students went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to study the Aboriginal language and its impact on Australian English. We looked at the River of Language exhibit, and the First Peoples exhibit. The language influence of the Aboriginal language was very interesting and it was thrilling to see the impact they had on the language we use today. It was very enjoyable to listen to and read the words that they said, especially because the language that they used was used orally more frequently than written, and how the language of flora and fauna like 'kangaroo' that they used, was passed on to our generation and we still use today. The excursion was very valuable to our area of study and learning and we all very much enjoyed it!

Theatre studies

This week the Year 11 Theatre class presented extracts from the play ‘The Crocodile’ by Tom Basden. The Crocodile is a satirical play in the absurdist style and is based on a Dostoyevsky short story of the same name. It was originally set in Russia in 1865 during the reign of Alexander the Second who freed the serfs. The students decided to set their version in a modern time period but the themes of  greed, power, desire for fame and media manipulation remained the same. The students worked hard to rehearse their scenes and to design the production elements for the show. The cast gave an energetic and comical performance on the night and should be congratulated for their efforts.
