REMINDER – CURRICULUM DAY FRIDAY 10th MAY

STUDENTS DO NOT ATTEND SCHOOL ON THIS DAY.

FOCUS: Moving from the Simple to the Complex of Literacy Learning

We are delighted to be working with Associate Professor Misty Adoniou PhD , Principal Fellow MGSE, Adjunct Associate Professor University of Canberra. Misty will be provide all teachers with professional learning that will develop their own knowledge of how language works, the differences between spoken and written language, and the ways in which language differs across the disciplines – most particularly at sentence and word level (sentence syntax and vocabulary).

She will our teachers with a pedagogical model that explicitly teaches language and literacy through the use of exemplary high quality literature texts (Adoniou & Macken-Horarik, 2007). Teachers will apprentice students into complex written language through close attention to the ways in which language has been used to achieve meanings. This provides opportunities for engagement with subtle aspects of language in the text, particularly at sentence and word level.

The curriculum day will focus on both these solutions, modelling ways to teach language through literature, whilst simultaneously building teachers’ own language knowledge. We are working with Misty in a cluster of schools including South Yarra PS, Glenhuntly PS and Prahran High School. It will be a wonderful opportunity for staff at all four schools to network and collaborate throughout this professional learning opportunity.
