Learning and Teaching

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.

A Snapshot of Maths at St Louis

Amazing things are happening across our school in Mathematics this term…

Our Preps are exploring early number concepts and are enjoying counting the days of school in the lead up to their 100 Days of School celebrations which will occur later in the year. Our Year 1 students have been building on their prior knowledge of place value using a range of ways to make and represent numbers. In Year 2, students have been engaged in creating some amazing maps and have been collecting and representing data on graphs.

Our year 3s have also been focusing on place value this term. They have extended their thinking to benchmark numbers on empty number lines and have been having fun with a variety of maths games to support their learning and engagement. Earlier this term, our Year 4 students explored and compared the geometric properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects. They used a range of hands on and digital technologies whilst exploring this concept.

Our Year 5 students linked their maths learning to their Phillip Island camp by exploring mapping and location earlier this term. This made their maths sessions relevant, engaging and based on real life situations.

This week, our Year 6 students were asked to reflect on their feelings towards Mathematics. They were instructed not to ‘hold back’ or tell their teachers what they thought they wanted to hear, but instead to be raw and honest in their responses. They were given the sentence starter “If Maths was a food it would be…” and asked to justify their choice. This task was a great way to capture student engagement and their self-concept as a Mathematics learner. Our plan is to revisit these statements throughout the year and discuss if their opinion of learning Mathematics has evolved.

The challenge for us now as their educators is to harness the positive feelings some students have towards Mathematics and support those who are more reluctant to hopefully enjoy learning Mathematics through positive experiences in the classroom. We are hoping to engage our students across all year levels in Mathematics this year through the use of open-ended questions, rich inquiry investigations and by making maths relevant to real life situations.
