Student Support Groups

Student Support Group meetings are coming up on the 29th of March. Meetings can be booked using Compass.

This year our student support group meetings will be focused on three critical areas of Individual Education Planning. These areas are:

  • English
  • Health and PE
  • Personal and Social Capabilities

Our teachers understand the importance of teaching across the breadth of curriculum and that's why all curriculum areas will be taught and reported on each semester. It's just that we would like to set some additionally important goals for students and teachers to achieve this year.

The SSG meetings will focus on setting three long term goals and three short term goals. As a support group we will discuss the student's readiness, the strategies, the supports, the teaching plans and evaluating the student's success each term.

Each of the SSG days will be conducted over half a day between 1.00 pm and 7.00 pm

the dates for SSG meetings are:

  • Tuesday  29th March
  • Thursday 9th June
  • Thursday 1st September
  • Monday 12th December

These meetings are essential to maintain the partnership and support students to reach their full potential.

Connecting with the Community and Building Relationships

The EEP, therapy, and nurture team invited all local preschool educators in for an Information session. Many of our students attend Yarrabah and mainstream preschool or child care and this session is a great way to make connections and build the team around the student. We provide an informative resource book for each centre to help them to support each student and encourage consistency of strategies between settings. We had a great turnout and hope to see many of the educators back for our SSGs.

Friday 25th February was our first playgroup for 2022. We run the playgroup every Friday 9.30-10.30 am for families with children that are witnessing some developmental issues or concerns. We had a great first session with three lovely new families.  The Yarrabah playgroup is a safe space to build connections with others, seek advice and feel supported. Just like the African proverb says-‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’.

Upper Junior - Learning for Life

This term in Mathematics, students in the Upper Junior section have engaged in a range of learning activities within the 3 strands of the Victorian Curriculum- Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Opportunities to use hands-on learning materials are incorporated into student learning as a motivator to engage in the concepts. Some favourites so far this term have been using M&M’s/Skittles to complete a tally table, exploring the length and weight using informal and formal measurement methods, and counting with tactile materials such as play-dough.
