Diversity and Inclusion

Yarrabah is a welcoming safe space for all.

Yarrabah is an inclusive school.  It is every student's right to have an education.

Inclusiveness at Yarrabah looks like:

  • The opposite of exclusion; no student is left out or discriminated against because of their differences.
  • Togetherness - all students are engaged, integrated, motivated and valued.
  • Participation - all students are provided with the necessary support they need to access and participate in all areas of the school curriculum and programs.
  • Individuals - all students are unique and different.  These qualities are acknowledged, accepted, appreciated and embraced.
  • Accommodation and adaptation - Change the education system to suit the student, not the student to fit in with the system.

Equality versus Equity

Equality - all students are treated equally and fairly.  They are given the same rules, responsibilities and privileges' regardless of their individual needs.

Equity -  all students are given what they need to achieve outcomes.  Each child has access to relevant, challenging academic experiences and educational resources necessary for such successful outcomes.

Equality without equity only works if we all start from the same baseline.  All people come from differing experiences, skills, ideas and backgrounds.  We all have barriers that can prevent us from enjoying equality.  At Yarrabah we want to remove those barriers.
