iSea iCare

Hello from our Sustainability Leaders

On Tuesday 3rd March our Sustainability Leaders attended a peer mentoring workshop at Mentone Primary School. The students collaborated with their peers from Mentone Primary School and Chelsea Heights Primary School to educate a Prep class on the marine environment. Mia K, Kara G, Oscar L and Alex B were delighted when they each received an official certificate and badge acknowledging their important roles as iSea iCare Ambassadors for The Great Southern Reef.

On Tuesday the 3rd of March, the Sustainability Leaders Kara, Alex, Oscar and I went to Mentone Primary School. First we were taught about the ocean by the instructors and they went through the three acts with us. Once we had written all our notes down we could start to practise our parts, since we were presenting in front of the Preps we had to be prepared, speak with excitement and good body language. Once the Preps arrived they sat down and Kara and I started the introduction. Then there was activity one which was about marine mammals, the second activity was beachcombing and the third activity was on the food boxes which was our part! For the food boxes we had to pretend we were hungry dolphins and we had to get the preps to put their hands in a box that was full of trash instead of food! In the end we had to get the food out of the box ourselves because it was a tiny play squid. The whole floor was covered in trash because there was so much plastic in those boxes. Then it was time for Alex and Oscar to talk about the balloons and straws that are bad for the environment. Instead of balloons we can use bubbles and instead of straws, we can use metal straws or no straws at all. Overall, I think we all did a pretty good job considering we didn’t have much time to learn it all and present. I learnt a lot about our oceans and marine mammals including how sea stars eat their food. I can’t wait to teach the younger grades at OLA about the beach. By Mia.

On Tuesday the third of March the iSea iCare ambassadors went on a excursion to Mentone Primary School to learn about the ocean, after that we taught a prep class about the ocean. When we were taught about the ocean the instructors told us how we would present the talk and that we should be enthusiastic so we would get the Preps’ attention. The talk had lots of interactive activities so the students could answer questions and participate in little demonstrations of points we were making. Mia and I got to do part one of act three were we pretended to be hungry dolphins and we got the preps to reach into a box to try and find us food but the box was filled with rubbish and there was a tiny squid in the back of the box!  When we reached into the box at the end we found the squid but then the floor was covered in trash. Then Alex and Oscar came on and told the Preps that they should use bubbles and not balloons and to use metal straws instead of plastic straws. It was so much fun teaching the Preps about the ocean and its inhabitants but the Preps weren't the only ones learning new things, I learnt that to eat their food, sea stars take out their stomach through their mouth and put it onto their food then mix it up then put their stomach back into their mouth. We also learnt about things we can do to help the environment. One such thing is to use reusable drink bottles and not plastic ones. I can’t wait to teach the OLA Preps about the oceans, it is going to be so much fun! By Kara.

On Tuesday 3rd of March, Alex, Kara, Mia and I went on an excursion to Mentone Primary School where we learnt lots of information about the environment and taught it all to Prep students. We worked with two other schools called Mentone Primary School and Chelsea Heights Primary School. Alex and I told the Preps how we should use bubbles instead of balloons and no straws or reusable straws instead of plastic straws to care for the environment. A helpful tip for you is that you should use metal straws instead of plastic straws because plastic straws are bad for the environment and end up in our oceans. I just can't wait to teach the younger levels about the environment later this term. By Oscar.

On Tuesday 3rd of March, Oscar, Mia, Kara and I went to Mentone Primary School as proud iSea iCare Ambassadors to teach young Preps about the ocean. When we arrived at Mentone Primary I was excited to teach their young Preps about the ocean. When the other iSea iCare students from Mentone Primary School took us to their library and unpacked our bags. Soon after Chelsea Heights Primary School arrived as well. As I got my notepad and my pencil ready to take notes Mandy talked to us about introduction tips when talking to the Preps. After we got the tips we went through the jobs of Act 1. Act 1 was mostly about teaching the Preps about marine animals and was for Mentone Primary. After we got through Act 1 we started to get into Act 2 which was about ocean objects such as kelp that can grow up to 40m long! Chelsea Heights was acting this part. Then finally Act 3 was about hungry dolphins ( Kara and Mia ) and trying to find their food ( squids in the box ) but they kept pulling out rubbish so they said “fine we’ll do it ourselves!” and got the squids. Oscar and I then said things about the environment. My tip for the future generations and people now is that we should use reusable things like bubbles and not balloons. I am excited to teach our Preps and more about the ocean and how to help the environment! By Alex.
