Year Prep

In Prep this week we have begun our Inquiry topic - "What can we explore and discover at school?" with a focus on Water. We started off by reading the picture storybook "Who Sank the Boat?". We then had a brainstorm about what "floating" and "sinking" means. Madelyn explained that sinking is when something in water goes to the bottom. Rayzon explained that floating means it stays on the top!

This was followed by some time in Discovery where students explored the new Water Station in small groups. The groups experimented by putting different objects in water and observing what happens, and if the objects float or sink. Lance observed that when he put a paper cup in water it floated, but when he put a rock inside the paper cup, the cup sank!

We will continue to explore the concept of floating and sinking over the next couple of weeks, before moving on to other properties of water.

Year 1

This week the Year 1's were introduced to the well known Pamela Allen book "Who Sank the Boat?" as part our our Inquiry unit. We had many wonderings about the book and who actually sank the boat.

Laura asked “how does the lightest animal (the mouse) sink the boat?”

Mia stated “that all of the animals sank the boat.”

Eklavya made a prediction that “the boat would fill up with water and sink to the bottom.”

The students made some great connections from the book to our Discovery area, where we have set up some water play. The students were starting to predict whether the items we have like rubber ducks, plastic cups, glass jars and rocks will float or sink.

Year 2

Basketball Fun!

Over the past few weeks, Year 2 have been further developing their basketball skills. During their PE sessions, the students have been practising how to bounce pass and chest pass to a peer, how to catch a ball and how to bounce a ball with only one hand.

Place Value!

In Maths, the Year 2s have been learning about Place Value. Have a look below to see the different one, two and three digit numbers they have represented using MAB blocks and ice-pole sticks.

Goodbye Alex!

Last week, we said goodbye to Alex, one of our Learning Support Officers at Sacred Heart. To celebrate Alex and the amazing work he did over the last few years, the Year 2 students had a disco. We dressed up in Alex’s favourite colours and listened to some of his favourite songs. Thank you Alex, for helping the students at Sacred Heart learn and grow. We will miss you and wish you the best!

Year 3/4 - How to be Safe Online Tips.

Chutney for Tonga!

This week we have been reminded of the awful natural disaster that occurred over the holidays and greatly affected Tonga, a country with which we at Sacred Heart have a strong affiliation with. So we wore casual clothes this week to raise money for Caritas, who are providing support for the people of Tonga.

As part of our Science unit, we wanted to find out what happened when you mixed fruit and heat! Together with some other yummy ingredients, as well as tomatoes grown from our garden, we made some chutney, which will be on sale next week at school! We're donating the money to Caritas to help our neighbours in Tonga at this most difficult time. So come and support us next week, buy some D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S home made (well, school made, really) chutney and support the relief effort in Tonga!

Math's Mayhem

We've been studying Place Value in Mathematics pretty much for the past two weeks and have been having lots of fun building numbers and creating Math's Expanders, such as the ones you can see in the photos.

'I know that 6 364 is the same as six thousand, three hundred and sixty four. It's also 63 hundreds and 64 ones!' Enock

'I know that three thousand, seven hundred and fifty one is written like this 3, 751' Michael

I know that1087 can be split up into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones' Ishe

'I made two thousands, nine hundreds, seven tens and one one to make this number ~

Library News

'Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. READ!'

We had a lovely visit to the Library by Marie's 3/4 Class today. They spent some time discussing respectful ways to make good use of their Library and then had a wonderful time choosing books to take home to read and enjoy there. And of course there was time for lounging on the bean bags and giant cushions having a lovely read of some of our new library books. It's lovely having our Library come to life with our students making good use of the facilities we have.
