From the Heads of Secondary

Senior Secondary

In Senior School at Calrossy, we remain committed to providing a range of opportunities for students so that they can develop their skills and explore their passions with the goal  that the young men and women at Calrossy are equipped to contribute to the world.

It is on this foundation that we can provide a range of opportunities both inside and outside the curriculum to cater to the individual needs of students. One such opportunity is the University Open Day that was hosted by Calrossy earlier this week. During this time students were able to speak to representatives from a range of universities and discuss possible post school pathways.

What would you like to pursue after school?

My dream course I would like to pursue after school is a double degree in Nursing and Paramedicine. From here I hope to become a Paramedic working in London for a few years. My second preference would be to become a Registered Nurse and Midwife – I think this would be a very rewarding job. However I would be happy in any health career.

How is Calrossy equipping you with the skills you need to be successful after school?

Calrossy is providing me the opportunity to be successful after school by continuously providing support that assistances me in achieving exactly what I would like to do after school. Continuous opportunities are given to me by Calrossy every day that help me best prepare to be successful after school. These opportunities often look like diverse learning opportunities, careers classes that explore skills such as resume writing and opportunities found and given to me by our excellent careers adviser, Mr Impey. He goes above and beyond to get to everyone on provide an individual and specific path for success.

What did you learn at the University Open day?

The university open day taught me that there is many different pathways to get into your dream course. This showed me that if you do not get into your preferred Course, there is other courses you can do that will eventually lead you into your desired course. The University open day also gave me valuable information on topics such as Education Fees, Accommodation, Scholarships and specific course knowledge that help prepare me for my university education.

Do you have any ideas on which university you would like to attend?

I am open to the idea of attending any university that provides me with the most ideal opportunity for what I would like to pursue. However, I am currently interested in University of Tasmania (Sydney Campus, Double Degree - Bachelor of Paramedicine and Bachelor of Nursing), Charles Sturt University (Port Macquarie Campus, Bachelor of Paramedicine), Australian Catholic University (Sydney, Double Degree - Bachelor of Paramedicine and Bachelor of Nursing) and The University of Newcastle (Bachelor of Nursing).

What’s one lesson from Calrossy that you will take into your future?

A lesson I leant that I can achieve anything that you put your mind too. Dedication, Motivation and Passion will take you further than you have ever imagined. No dream is too big or unachievable.

Calrossy 7-9

Last week Year 9 had the privilege of hearing from an organisation called Stand Tall. Noah and Ella share about the experience below.

On Wednesday morning 23rd February, Year 9 had the opportunity to listen to two guest speakers from the stand tall organisation. Calrossy had the privilege of being visited by Olympian and famous Australian long distance runner Eloise Wellings, who is also the co-founder of the Love Mercy Foundation. As well as mindset coach and cricketer Rory Darkins.

In the 2 hour talk we learned about how Eloise has overcome adversity after adversity, with stress fractures and nearly giving up on her training. For 12 years she waited until finally in 2012 she performed in her first Olympics. Not only did she teach us about her journey, but how perseverance, and having an open mindset helped her get to do her dream. The talk gave us skills to help us reduce stress in our own lives and how to get perspective on events in our lives that might seem massive or impossible and turn the situation around, like Eloise did when she missed out on competing at the third Olympics she had qualified for, due to injury. When this happened Eloise - rather than quit, got perspective on her situation with help from a friend and Ugandan Olympian and between them they founded the love mercy foundation.

The love mercy foundation helps educate and supply Ugandan people with essential skills and resources to help bring the country out of poverty. She has also continued competing in the 5km and 10km races and has been in 4 Commonwealth Games, 2 Olympics and is currently travelling and competing in marathons whilst raising her 2 kids. Eloise and Rory also taught us how to recognise our passion, and how to follow our dreams with grit and determination so that we have the best chance of succeeding and being happy in the future, and I know all of us got a lot out of hearing Eloise’s story and how she has continued to fight to pursue her dream.

Stand Tall

Last week Yrs 7 - 9 had the pleasure of  having Rory Darkins and Olympian Eloise Wellings  speak to students about motivation and resilience. The students heard from Eloise about her career and the resilience she has had to show over numerous years as a long-distance runner, and the project she is involved with in Uganda supporting education for women in rural areas.

They also heard from sports phycologist and motivator Rory Darkins about his career and some tips on how to stay motivated throughout the year and show resilience in life.

The students then had the opportunity to spend time with Eloise and Rory to ask questions.

Thanks to Stand Tall for supporting the event and allowing us the opportunity to hear from Rory and Eloise.

We are so thankful for these opportunities at Calrossy. The resilience discussed is something that is a key value at Calrossy. As a school we have always had to show resilience through droughts, fires, floods, wars and COVID. It is fantastic that our Year 9 students were able to hear about such an important value from some people with great experiences to share.
