Primary News

Mr Liam Beatty, Head of Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

Thank you all for your support last week during what was certainly an extra-ordinary week of schooling. I was extremely proud of the way our staff and students were able to quickly transition to learning online last Friday. This ensured that our boys continued learning during an already disrupted Term 1.

As we continue to journey through the term, I encourage you to take an opportunity to ‘check-in’ with your son about the start they have had to the year and what their goals are for the rest of the term. In our Primary Yard Assembly on Monday, our first in-person gathering of the year, I encouraged the boys to continue to be 100% Marist, 100% of the time by setting high expectations for themselves in all areas of College life. As Marist men, this means not being content with mediocrity and continuing to set their sights on noble goals.

Season of Lent

Last Wednesday we officially embarked on our Lenten journey, the beautiful season of the Church when Catholics prepare for Easter by getting back to the basics of our faith – Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. In the busyness of life, sometimes we need the season of Lent to remind us of the importance of our faith. Lent is also a season where we start to hear of people’s commitment to fasting through conversations about what they are ‘giving up?’. Sometimes these are extremely thoughtful and faith-filled. Other times, boys talk about giving up homework, vegetables and having a shower…..Pope Francis’ reflection on fasting particularly resonates with me, and I hope it will with you…

Fast from hurting words…..and say kind words.
Fast from sadness …..and be filled with gratitude.
Fast from anger…..and be filled with patience.
Fast from pessimism…..and be filled with hope.
Fast from worries …..and trust in God.
Fast from complaints….. and contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressures …..and be prayerful.
Fast from bitterness…..and fill you heart with joy.
Fast from selfishness …..and be compassionate to others
Fast from grudges…..and be reconciled.
Fast from words …..and be silent so you can listen.

It is expected that all students and families are following Queensland Health expectations for isolation for positive cases and close contacts.

Families In Need

As a Marist Family, we are always there to help in times of need. If you are aware of an MCA family in need after the recent weather events, please let me know via emailing beattyl@marash.qld.edu.au . All information will be kept confidential as we work as a community to support each other during these challenging times.

Reminders

If your son is sick or unwell, please keep them home. Any students who are displaying flu-like symptoms at school will be sent to Primary Reception where their parents will be contacted immediately to collect them. These students will be provided with a Rapid Antigen Test.

Come and Try Hockey

Marist College has strong links with Norths Hockey Club and they have extended an invitation to all Marist boys to come and give hockey a try. Primary boys are the perfect age to start playing and will be made very welcome and become an important part of the club. Training is provided with the opportunity to represent MCA once the boys enter senior school.

Games do not begin until the start of Term 2 but training has begun every Thursday night at Dorrington Park at 6:00pm.

For further details please contact Russell Thirgood - russell@thirgoodarb.com

Alternatively, turn up to training on a Thursday night to see if you enjoy hockey. It is a great game as many would have seen watching the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos at the Olympics. It would be great to see some Marist / Norths boys playing for the Kookaburras in 2032!

Sports Photographs

We are always on the lookout for photos and action shots to be used for the Blue and Gold, other College publications, season or end-of-year wrap-ups etc. Please follow this link and add your photos - Marist College Ashgrove Primary Sports Photos

Pick-up Arrangements - “Plan B”

It is important that you are aware of the pick-up procedures if you are running late. Sport training sessions finish by 4:45pm. We ask that boys are picked up at this time, or soon after. Any boy who is still at their training venue at 5:00pm will be directed to the Boarding Reception area so that he may be collected from there. In the case of bus arrivals, boys will be sent to Boarding Reception 15 minutes after the arrival time of the bus.

College App

Please ensure that you download the College App to your smartphone. This app will be used weekly to inform you of sporting fixtures, cancellations and bus arrival information.
