Uniform - Term 2

With the term flying by it is time to start thinking about getting organised for term 2 sport. Sign-ups are happening now and information for each sport is being released through the College App as it comes to hand. It is important that boys are also getting organised with the apparel for the relevant sports.

For match apparel for the general population boys will need to visit the uniform shop and they will be fitted out with the correct apparel for their sport. We are in the second year of a transition so boys are still able to wear previous garments, but this will end at the conclusion of this year. The College has listened to feedback from last year and adjusted the rugby jersey to include a collar. While there is no obligation to buy the jersey, for those people who purchased a jersey in 2021, you will be able to buy a new jersey with the collar, with a 50% off discount.

In terms of training I encourage boys to wear the College training shirt or singlet and the appropriate Marist sport shorts. There are reasons why teams wear a uniform: identity, obvious for matches, and belonging are key concepts. I can refer you to the fabulous book Belonging by Owen Eastwood about the importance of having a sense of belonging to the team. Having a consistent uniform brings an “all in this together” mentality, everyone in the group is equal, the garments are designed for the purpose, and it builds a sense of pride, team spirit and honour.

It is not compulsory to wear the Marist training shirt or singlet to training but it is compulsory that players and coaches are wearing appropriate equipment. As an example, this includes shin pads in football, correct footwear in all sports (except swimming), and appropriate apparel for the activity (school formal uniform is not appropriate for training). This expectation applies to gym sessions as well.

For first teams, once the squad has been selected boys are able to purchase the marigold training shirt, shorts and socks for the uniform shop. The College will provide the playing jersey for the season, with boys able to purchase it at the end of the season if they wish to keep it as a souvenir. All 1sts teams are required to wear the current first teams training apparel for training sessions.

Track and Field - Mr Robin Martin - Coach

After the recent floods reduced the QLD State Track and Field Championships to a two-day event it was a great result for Marist athletes with a return of 9 medals. The following students achieved medals:

  • Connor Campbell            – Gold U14 200m and Gold U14 400m
  • Lee Martin                        – Gold U17 Shot Put and Silver U17 Javelin
  • Elliot Aldridge                  – Gold U16 400m and Silver U16 Discus
  • Jonah Miles                      – Gold u16 Javelin
  • Joel Drew                          – Silver U17 400m Hurdles
  • James Prole                      – Silver U17 800m, 6th U17 1500m

It is interesting to note that all medallists had continued their training commitment through Term 4, Christmas Break and Term 1 and have reaped reward for their ongoing efforts. This is great work. All of the athletes above had already pre-qualified for the Australian Junior Championships in April through qualification times or via top 3 placings at QLD All Schools. All have now confirmed their spot and other athletes including Tom Prole, Zac Milligan, Xavier Simms, Asher Parkin and Isaac Roach have also made the Queensland team through other qualification routes and can nominate for the team.

Some other great performances across the team at QLD State Championships including:

  • Zac Milligan (4th U15 800m missing bronze by a slim 0.01 margin but still a national qualifying time)
  • Jack Lafferty (4th U17 Triple Jump, 19th 100m),
  • Isaac Roach (7th U17 400m)
  • Asher Parkin (7th U16 1500m)
  • Tom Prole (7th U20 1500m)
  • Jacob Keogh (8th U17 800m)
  • Xavier Simms (9th U17 100m and 10th U17 200m)
  • Harry Prole (16th U14 800m, 19th U14 1500m)

Recent Old Boys also performed well including Dan Drew (4th 110m Hurdles), Macgregor Leavy (10th Open 100m) and Hamiltyn Burns (17th Open 400m).

Overall: It was pleasing to see so many athletes continue through since the school season in Term 3 and 4 of 2021 and with Little Athletics State Titles next weekend, the QLD 3000m Championships and the Australian Junior Championships coming up there are still many meets for Marist athletes to post good performances in readiness for our AIC title defence in Term 3 this year.

Football - Mr Derek Lennon - Co-ordinator

It is my pleasure to be the Football coordinator for Marist this year in addition to my role as Head of Sport. I come to Marist after nearly 15 years as Director of Football at Churchie in the GPS competition. Although my Head of Sport role at Marist is all-encompassing, I look forward to working with the coaches and coordinators, as well as the players and families, to build the football program over the coming years. Joining me as a new staff member this year will be a new First XI coach as Mr King has moved to Brisbane Boys College. We have been very fortunate to secure Mr Corey Brown, current Brisbane Roar A-League player, as our new Head Coach. Corey has over 10 years playing experience, having played under Ange Postecoglou, Kevin Muscat and Warren Moon, and completed his coaching licences through the PFA. I actually gave Warren his first coaching job at Churchie so if Corey proves even half as successful it will prove to be a great appointment. In a nice touch, Corey is a Marist Old Boy so it is like a coming home for him and will combine his passion for the College with his extensive football knowledge.

Please keep an eye out in the coming weeks for information on the College App with regards to trials, training, pre-season fixtures and season information.
