Top Class Dance Performance

On Wednesday, 16 of March 2022 the VCE Dance class at Cranbourne traveled into Melbourne CBD to watch the Top Class Dance performance. Dance is an expressive language that crosses cultures throughout the world, giving expression to social and personal experiences, with VCE dance providing this opportunity in the classroom at St. Peter’s College. The Top Class Dance performance included top scoring dance solos from the 2021 academic year that inspired students to work on their own creative studies and also provided realistic examples of best practice. The concert showcased dance in many forms including classical ballet, hip hop, tap and musical theatre.

Due to COVID restrictions and reschedules, this is the first time in two years that the Top Class Dance excursion was able to be held, and the excitement of all students and teachers in the theatre was palpable. The students left the theatre feeling inspired to work on their own solos in preparation for the performance exam at the end of the year.

Just Dance - The Fuse Cup 2022

Thursday 17th March saw the beginning of the new St. Peter's College eSports Team participate in the Just Dance Fuse Cup State Competition, held at Wesley College. 4 students from the Clyde North Campus participated against 7 other schools on the day in a number of heats.  The Fuse Cup is a national based eSports competition, which provides school students with a face to face, safe, competitive and challenging esports opportunity while also promoting concepts such as Digital Wellbeing, Inclusion and Social Values.

Well done to Hunter Rouse, Thomas Bartlett, Hannah Mathew and Lucas Bartlett on successfully making the eSports team, and for their fantastic teamwork and support of all players on the day.

International Women’s Day Casey Tech Morning Tea

"The morning tea we had at the International Women’s Day event was splendid! The atmosphere was welcoming and the food was delicious! I had already been inspired by Jackie Bondell’s speech but actually talking one on one with a PhD student working in OzGrav made me feel more reassured of having a career in STEM as a woman. She told us about her career journey and how she had several changes to her career, and it seemed so worth it for her to be in the place she is in. We even had a cup tower challenge that got us to laugh together even though we didn’t win. Overall, it was a very inspiring and fun start to the day!"

Astrophysicist - Keynote Speaker

“During international women's day we had the privilege of speaking to Jackie Bondell, an incredible woman and astrophysicist working on developing equipment to detect dark matter as well as working with OzGrav (The ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery). On top of this she was a mother and teacher. While Jackie discussed with us what her work entailed she gave us an insight into her journey, what it took to get to where she is today and how she was constantly changing direction and pivoting to take new and exciting opportunities including making the move from the US to Australia. This also included the challenges she had to face from being a woman in a heavily male dominated STEM field. We were able to dig deeper into this year's theme, #BreakTheBias, and how it not only meant to break down stereotypes of others but to prove ourselves wrong by doing things we may have never believed possible. And only then when this is all completed can we truly Break the Bias.”

Activities after Presentations

“After the presentations, each group was assigned to complete an activity. Our activity was coding; we were given micro:bits and an iPad, in which we had to code to display a message. The micro:bits were earthquake premeditators that could detect the shake of the atmosphere (x-horizontal, y-vertical, z-up and down). Overall, it was a fun activity and I discovered things I haven’t learned before - it was a great learning experience and insight into coding. The activities only encompassed one aspect of STEM, but the presentations dove deeper into all parts of STEM: ranging from physics to biology. This program can become an indicator in your future subject selections (for me, it definitely will!)”

- Bianca

“All in all, the International Women’s Day at Casey Tech was a fun and enjoyable experience which consisted of exploring the world of STEM. I had an amazing time and I would definitely come back again.”

"From the College Archives"

Fr. Peter James (Jim) McGuigan was ordained to the priesthood at St. Patrick’s College, County Armagh, Ireland in 1952. Almost immediately he, and a group of fellow priests, embarked on a journey to Australia. He disembarked in Melbourne, November 1952. At that time, he became a diocesan priest under the authority of Bishop Richard Ryan, the Bishop of Sale.

He was Parish Priest of St. Agatha’s, Cranbourne during a time of expansion and building in the western area of the diocese. As such, he was a member of the Board of Management of St. Francis Xavier College, Beaconsfield. He was instrumental in convincing the Board of Management that Cranbourne needed a Catholic secondary school. As a result of his advocacy, St. Peter’s College began as the Junior Campus of St. Francis Xavier College in 1987. In 1994, St. Peter’s College, as it is known today opened its doors to students.

St. Peter’s College recognised the contribution of Fr. McGuigan’s contribution to the community of St. Peter’s College in the name of the McGuigan Building (home of MacKillop House) at the Cranbourne Campus and McGuigan Drive that intersects Navarre Drive.
