SAKG NEWS

As we are experiencing the cooler weather some hearty dishes are being whipped up in the kitchen. Starting with Communal soup using potatoes and fresh greens and herbs from the garden, including rosemary, thyme, parsley, and silver beet, rainbow chard, and thanks to Jodie some red Russian kale and tromboncino.  We also have a significant amount of green tomatoes, as a result of the cooler summer, so students will be experimenting with roasting these with garlic and onion in the oven and adding them to the soup.  A variety of potatoes will be used so students can see the range, not just your ordinary chip vegetable!  To accompany our soup students will be baking bread, which is very popular.  For something different, students will also be making nasturtium pesto.  Nasturtium is not only an amazing flower for looks and encouraging diversity in the garden, it is edible, with delicious flowers and peppery leaves.  This pesto will be used on the freshly baked bread and to possibly flavour the soup. And then to top this delicious menu off students will making rhubarb crumble with custard as we have an abundance of rhubarb in the garden.

Activities in the garden will closely correlate with what is being prepared in the kitchen.  The ‘harvest’ group will harvesting all the vegetables (particularly potatoes), herbs and rhubarb that they will need for each of the dishes outlined above. When in the ‘animal’ group students will be feeding and watering, collecting and cleaning the eggs and refreshing the straw in the laying boxes. The ‘grow’ group will be getting physical and clearing paths of weeds and leaves. And lastly the ‘observe and create’ group will be getting artistic and creating colourful patterned paper using potato stamps of which they have made themselves or autumn leaves.

Please look out at the end of this report for some of our delicious recipes from both this rotation and the previous on, particularly the green tomato cake.

Lastly the SAKG team would like to say a big thank you to all the grandparents and special people who supported our plant stall last Friday.  It was a very successful morning with over $240 being raised.  We hope that your chosen plant, seed, seedlings or flowers provide much joy.  We would also like to make special note of our amazing garden leaders and helper who ran the stall on the day.  To Kaylee R, Lily P, Lucas L, Lexi B and Leila C, your commitment and efforts are greatly appreciated and we don’t know what we would do without you.
