Working Bee

What an amazing community we have! With 20 families helping out the school is looking much tidier. During this working bee we had leaf clean up, weeding, gardening, tidying, planting, moving of mulch and removal of locker doors! Thank you to all those who attended and helped out!

Each term we hold a working-bee and hope that all families will be able to help out at one of the four planned sessions. Working-bees go for 3-hours and give the school the ability to use school funds on the education of the students. Working bees save the school thousands of dollars in gardening and maintenance.

The following families gave up some time and helped out on Saturday:

Congratulations to all the Year 3-6 students who ran at the District Cross Country on Tuesday last week and the twelve that made it to the Division event that was held yesterday.  It was great to see all of the students from our local schools racing.

Congratulation to three Solway students who made it through to the next stage – Regional on the 14 June: Indiah H, Evie G and Dani P. We wish you all the best at the next stage.

Staffing

I would like to thank Karen O’Neill who has agreed to take on the office administration role for the remainder of the year. Karen has settled into the office very well and her knowledge of the Solway community has been a great help with her transition. Please pop by and say hello to Karen when you get a chance!

I will be on Long Service Leave during Term 3, heading to Fiji after the school holidays for some time in the sunshine and then a break. Kate Nancarrow will be the Acting Principal and Sarah Watkins will be supporting Kate, as the Acting Assistant Principal . I am confident that the wonderful Solway staff will support Kate and Sarah as Solway continues with the regular events during Term 3.

Pupil Free Day and Long Weekend

Friday 9 June is a curriculum day when our staff will take part in Literacy professional learning focusing on our school goal of writing. Monday 12 June is a Public Holiday, and the school will be closed. We hope our families enjoy the extra day over the long weekend and have a chance to enjoy the short break.

PLEASE Keep our community safe: Traffic information from our Crossing Supervisors

Our Crossing Supervisors work extremely hard to keep our students safe. These dedicated people care about our school, community and of course our students. I meet regularly with them and each time we discuss the near misses that they are either witness to, or are involved in. Each day they witness actions by adults that endanger safety. Please consider the safety of all our community when driving around the school grounds.

Below are some suggestions from our crossing supervisors based on what they witness each day:

Vehicle Parking and Stopping at the School Crossing on Winton Rd

For the safety of all our children please obey the parking signs. Parking and stopping on Winton Rd outside the school fence between Taylor St and Karnak Rd is only permitted in two areas, designated by the traffic signs. As this area has traffic signs, you may not stop, even momentarily to do a ‘stop and drop’, outside these two signed areas as it is a school crossing zone

  1. There is a 2-minute zone with room for one car, and
  2. A 10-minute zone with room for 3 cars.
  3. The line down the centre of the road extending away from the crossing also designates the no stopping areas.
    * Note also that pedestrians must use the actual crossing and may not cross the road in this area.
  4. The purpose of the 2-minute zone is to be a stop and drop point.
Please spend the minimum time possible in this spot - do not leave the area of your car.  If you need to enter the school grounds please part somewhere else.
  5. We also ask that you spend minimum time in the 10-minute zone because the build-up of traffic looking for a drop off point increases the risk to those using the school crossing, especially as cars are forced onto the wrong side of the road. In the interests of everybody, we ask that if you do need to park and leave your car for any more than a very brief period, or need to go into the school grounds, please park away from these two areas.
  6. ‘Buses Only’ signs. These are intended to let you know that buses will be arriving and will need to use the parking spaces. You may stop and drop in the signed areas if the buses are not there, but do not leave your vehicle parked there. Of course, you still may not stop illegally in the school crossing zone.
