In Mathematics, 1W has been busy learning about cutting, drawing, and sharing objects into equal and unequal parts. The children discussed what they would share and who they would share it with. Here is what the children said:

Sofia would share chocolate equally with Nia.
Joshua would break a chocolate block in half and give it to Sienna.
Ollie would also break chocolate in half and give it to Sienna.
Piper would share a cupcake equally with her mum.
Kevin would share a whole chocolate bar with his cousin.
Oscar would share chocolate with Alfie.
Anita would like to share a cupcake equally with her mum.
Sienna would like to give a pack of donuts to her cousin.
Nicholas would like to share pizza and cupcakes with Sienna and Ollie.
Mila will share cupcakes with her cousin.
Christopher will share a bucket of candy with Orson.
Orson will share a butler with Oscar. “We will get the butler to do the same amount of things”.
Alfie would like to share 1000 lollies with Oscar. “That’s 500/500!”
Blair would like to share ice-cream with Alfie and Nicholas.
Nia would like to share an icy pole with Sophia.
Elliott would like to collect all the candy in the world and share it with everyone at school.
Revansh would like to share 100 TV’s with Oscar.
Tiffany would share her toys with her friends.
Jason will share a chocolate bar equally with his dad.
Charlie would like to share a chocolate bar with Nicholas.
“Equal parts means that one person is getting the same part as someone else.”  Sienna
“When parts are not equal one slice might be bigger than another slice.”  Chloe
“If everyone gets the same amount, it’s fair.”  Piper

Marvellous Minibeasts!

On Monday 22 May, Year 1 students participated in their Minibeast incursion. Minibeast Wildlife ran the incursion and students had the best of fun! All students participated in a one hour session with their class where they were able to get up close with a range of minibeasts including a scorpion, spiders, stick insects, giant burrowing cockroaches, rainforest snails, a millipede, and a centipede.

Students showed a lot of bravery in holding some of the minibeasts including the tarantula ... spooky stuff! We are very grateful to have such an opportunity. Below are some photos from the day:

Qualifying students trained well for the Mulgrave District Cross Country event before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Ninety-six children from Years 3 to 6 represented Essex Heights at the Mulgrave District event at Mirrabooka Reserve in Blackburn South on Wednesday 24 May. They should all be very proud of their efforts, completing the 2km or 3km course. Overall, we placed 4th in the district.

Congratulations to those students who placed in the top 12, which qualified them to participate in the Monash Waverley Division Cross Country on Wednesday, 31 May - Nathan G, Zerrin A, Georgia A, Irene G, Max O, Ryan W, Damon H, Mavi A and Jayan C.

Thank you to Miss Cordell, Miss Lin, Miss Boles and Mr A for supervising and marshalling the students. Also, a huge thanks to Hilary, Carol, Jonna, Arun, Nicole and John for volunteering to marshall on the track. Your assistance was greatly appreciated!

Wonder Recycling Rewards

We are currently participating in the Wonder Recycling Rewards program. This fun and easy program was created to collect and recycle bread bags, helping keep these plastics out of landfill. Our recycling efforts will earn rewards points for our school that can be redeemed for new sports equipment from RH Sports. Bring your clean bread bags (they don't have to be Wonder Brand) to school, and leave them in a collection box by the end of term, Friday 23 June (the program ends on Friday 7 July during the school holidays). There are two collection boxes - one in the Office reception and one in the Stadium.

Music

Students in Year 1 have been learning to move to music and show the different sections in music with varied movements to match the form.

You can find the song here:

Use the ‘Ask Me’ sheet to reinforce your child’s musical understanding at home. You can use these questions to prompt your child to show you what they have been learning in their music lessons.

For your diary:  our whole school music celebration Showcase will be held on Friday 27 October at Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University.

Art

Harmony Week Poster Competition Winner - congratulations Isabella!

Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Every year, EHPS students enter their artworks to the Harmony Day Poster Competition. In the last five years, a student from EHPS has won first prize three times! Once again, this year there were so many fantastic entries by our talented EHPS students.

It is with great pride that we have the pleasure to announce that Isabella L (3L) is the regional winner (non-NSW) of the 2023 Harmony Day Poster Competition!

Isabella’s artwork (see below) demonstrated outstanding artistic technique and design, and beautifully depicted the values of inclusiveness, respect and belonging.

Isabella will receive a $150 prize and has been invited to an award ceremony to be held at the NSW Parliament House on 20 June. The Minister for Multiculturalism, Steve Kamper, and the Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure MP, will be the hosts. Her certificate will be presented by dignitaries at the ceremony.

Congratulations to Isabella, and all the EHPS students who entered the competition!

EHPS Art Show
