Dear Families,
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had an enjoyable and restful Easter break and are feeling refreshed and energised for the new term. We look forward to a great term filled with fun and learning opportunities for our students. There are many exciting activities and events planned for the coming weeks and we can't wait to see our students thrive and grow. Thank you for your continued support, and let's make this term a memorable one!
Next Friday, May 19th our Junior students will be heading on their excursion to Twisted Science Moorabbin. A friendly reminder to parents who have not yet completed the permission slip on Operoo, these need to be be submitted by Monday, May 15th. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher. Thank you for your cooperation.
Wishing all our beautiful mothers and carers a very Happy Mother's Day!
It's great to witness our Junior students quickly readjusting to their routines. The following elements come together to form the first hour of our mornings; Heggerty, sound pack, explicit teaching of a new skill, decoding (reading words), encoding (writing words), skill practice (applying our explicit teaching to activities), handwriting, mapping irregular words and fluency. This term, we are adding a new element to this sequence; morphology.
Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. Students will learn the structure of words and parts of words such as stems, root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
This term, our Topic focus is Staying Alive. In class have been delving into fundamental questions such as "What defines a living thing?", "What constitutes non-living?", and "What do living things to survive?". As a means to further explore these questions, the Junior classes have set up their own worm farms. We gathered various materials such as soil, sand, and leaves, and layered them carefully to provide a comfortable habitat for our worms.
Through daily observations, students have been able to witness the worms in action as they consume their food, wriggle around, and grow. During these observations, we also discuss what additional necessities the worms require to survive, including water and other types of food, such as banana peels.
Welcome to Prep Miss I!
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have Alisa Ianev from Swinburne University in our class for the initial weeks of this term. Miss I has quickly become a favourite of ours, and we thoroughly enjoy her lessons.
In our Maths lessons, we have been focusing on reviewing number and number structure, with specific attention on the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Additionally, we have started to explore the concept of data. As part of this, we learned that data involves gathering information and we practiced formulating 'yes/no' questions and answering them. We then tallied our responses and presented our findings using a class graph.
In MSL have been learning the 'duck rule'. We know that when the 'k' sound comes after a short vowel we use 'ck' like in the words rock, sick and pack.
During Maths we are currently learning the 'counting on' strategy, which involves keeping the larger number in mind and counting on from there with the smaller number. Additionally, we are exploring the place value of teen numbers.
We have been learning how to use common and proper nouns when writing recounts. During our fluency we have been looking at non fiction texts, aligning with our Topic.
In our Maths lessons, we have been delving into the concept of place value, specifically in relation to four-digit numbers. Through our activities, we have been able to showcase our understanding by breaking down numbers into their respective place values, which include thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Thank you Sadie for sharing your experience of taking care of pet budgies by bringing them to class. It was informative and enjoyable to learn about their care routine.
