Future STEM Gen

Year 7 Incursion

On Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th May our Year 7 students participated the a Science incursion run by Future STEM Gen. The Future STEM Gen team was led by Seamus Delaney from the School of Education at Deakin University, and was assisted by PhD students from a range of universities, including Monash and Deakin. The team trained our Year 11 Chemistry students to work as mentors to facilitate the delivery of the activities to our Year 7 students.

The team and mentors delivered two practical activities; Making Dye-sensitised solar cells with berries, and testing for Vitamin C in Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree). Each Year 7 class participated in one of these activities. Students were also able to talk to the PhD students about university and the projects they are currently working on.

This was a great opportunity for students to link everyday items with science, and for our senior students to act as mentors for those in junior classes.
