Making a confident and positive start to secondary education creates a solid foundation for success. Our college has been working closely with our feeder primary schools and community to welcome our year six students and their families into our college.
Over the last few weeks, we have been hosting regular school tours during the school day, to showcase our world class facilities in action and how we utilise them in.
Last Wednesday evening we held a Year 6 into7 Information Night. Our College Captains led tours through our neighbourhood buildings, the gymnasium and the Enterprise building and followed up with a presentation. Two of our Year 7 students also told the large audience about their transition experiences. The evening was captivating and informative.
Our College Captains and Year 7 students, Angel and Temperance, were outstanding ambassadors at the Year 6-7 Information Night recently.
The Transition program will continue with visits made to primary schools and ongoing communication between Primary Schools and our College to ensure we have a wrap around approach for the new students coming into our school in 2024.
We were very excited to see the re-launch of our ‘Hands-On-Learning Program’ this week. The new Hands-on-Learning Workshop has been fitted out and is located at the back of our school oval. The facility enables participating students to develop projects of interest one day a week as part of their regular program.
Students will design their project and be supported by Barbara Rigano, to see it come to fruition. This program will cater for several students at a time and will be a great asset for strengthening learning, engagement, and wellbeing in a small group environment.
This week, our Senior Winter Sports program took place with many students participating in Football, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Hockey and Clay-Target Shooting.
Students who participated in these teams demonstrated strong sportsmanship and were positive ambassadors for our college.
Last week our Year 10 students participated in a Careers Day held at the DECA complex. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore areas of interest, to gain information about a broad range of careers, and to interact with staff from various organisations. It was designed to strengthen awareness of careers options for future pathways. These sessions are a precursor to Subject Selection which will occur later this term. Our Careers Practitioners and our Geared for Careers team are supporting students by providing information that will inform subject select decisions that align to our student’s interests and aspirations.
Student Voice is valued highly at our college. We have a range of avenues for collecting student opinions that we use to continually make improvements for our college community. This includes student representation at school council, and recommendations made by College and House Captains, Values and Environment leaders, and the Student Representative Council.
The Attitudes to School Survey is a state-wide survey used in all government schools. We will undertake the survey next Tuesday 23rd May in an extended Home Group Session. The data we gather combines with other sources of data to support our decision making.
Next week is a week of celebration for our African Community. We have a range of cultural activities and experiences planned that will take place throughout the week. A highlight will be a special assembly taking place on Wednesday 24th May that will showcase song and dance from the various African countries represented in our college. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our cultural diversity and the talents of our students.
To finish we would like to congratulate our Multicultural Liaison Team who, last Monday evening were nominated for the Team Volunteeer Award at the Greater Shepparton City Council Volunteer Recognition Awards.
Congratulations as well to Jane Tremellen, a member of our wellbeing team, who was nominated for the Individual Volunteer Award.
Well done Bridget Ewert and her dance students for the outstanding performances on Tuesday evening. Bridget’s rapport with her students enabled them to perform their dances with grace, style and flair and the audience certainly enjoyed every minute of it. Well done Bridget.
On Thursday night our VET Hospitality students, under the careful guidance of Anna Corazza, Jodie Quattrocchi, Wendy Dimond and Ann Thompson, served a delicious three course meal to the School Council members. Our students presented themselves so professionally, it was a delight to see them shining in the kitchen and in the dining room, we are very proud of them.
And, finally well done to Alison Sealie, Joan Erickson and the Project Ready students for the wonderful mural they have painted behind The Patch, near the southern basketball courts.
Just some examples of the wonderfully talented students and dedicated staff we have here at Greater Shepparton Secondary College.
