Generations In Jazz

47 students and 6 staff headed off last Friday to Mt Gambier for Generations In Jazz. Following is a recount of the event by Michael Ebejer (12 Foynes) -

6am wake up.  6 hour drive. 47 guys on a bus.  Welcome to Generation in Jazz 2023!

On Friday, 5th May, Mazenod’s 3 greatest ensembles of all time, the Stage, Swing and Monk Band assembled at the busport at 7am in the morning, raring to perform and show off the amazing talent that Mazenod has to offer.  After playing the greatest game of Tetris of all time, fitting everyone’s luggage and musical instruments in one bus, we departed on our historic journey. We faced many challenges on the road, whether it be the laughing screams of friends on the main bus, or the senior boys surviving the ‘danger road’ with Mr Melitsis in the minivan.

Eventually, we made it to our place of refuge for the event, Allendale Primary School, whose amazing community let us sleep in their school and provided us with breakfast every morning. Upon arriving at Generations in Jazz itself, we were all dumbfounded at the sight of the main tent, a gigantic masterpiece of engineering with the capacity to hold almost 10,000 people. Our excitement only continued to grow as we met students from schools all across Australia, sharing a meal and cheering on the Jazz masters who performed for us on Friday night. After arriving back at the primary school, and a quick game of midnight foursquare, all 47 of us headed into the main hall for one of the most comfortable and relaxing sleeps of our lives.

Despite the cold, wet and muddy conditions on Saturday morning, we were all excited to get back to the main site and perform in our various divisions. Managing to not fall and sink in the mud, all our bands performed wonderfully, showing off all their practice and hard work, even though most of our fingers had been frozen off in the South Australian air. Finally, after a long day of performing, walking around in mud, we all headed to the main tent to witness a Swedish band called Dirty Loops, whose jazz fusion mixed with funk and modern pop songs blew everyone away, leading to a massive rave at the back of the tent, led by our year 12’s who showed off their epic dance moves.

Looking back on the trip, we all have amazing memories that we will carry with us for years to come, and I personally wouldn’t trade the experience for anything else.
